Mr. Birtwistle has over forty years of mechanical engineering experience in power production, steam generating, and chemical plant industries. This includes design, inspections, generating specifications, upgrading, maintenance, operations and construction.

Initial turnover operations to owner and identification of issues pertaining to warranty repairs. Coordination of repairs and modifications with the contractor. Design of mechanical, HVAC, power and fluid systems including construction/operations support integrating engineering principles in upgrading and maintaining chemical/nuclear processing facilities to current commercial and regulatory standards. This integrated the development of engineered solutions for preventative and corrective maintenance, testing and inspection requirements, troubleshooting system/equipment problems, modifications to/and replacement of equipment.

ABB Combustion Engineering, Inc.: Windsor, CT. Mechanical Engineer. Design of combined cycle heat recovery steam generators and packaged steam boilers, which included the design and specification of large heat transfer equipment, piping, valves, feedwater pumps/systems and miscellaneous support components. Interface with the customer and equipment manufacturer’s engineers resolving technical issues. Determination of performance guarantees, systems performance analysis and testing from design through final startup, as well as development and implementation of design revisions when required. Enhancement and maintenance of technical computer programs used in all phases of design, performance, and startup testing evaluation using applications software for development and compilation for operating systems. Design and specification of combustion emission control equipment including low NOx burners, staged combustion, flue gas recirculation, CO and SCR catalyst with ammonia injection and associated control and monitoring systems. Design of auxiliary nuclear fluids systems and engineered safeguard systems for pressurized water reactors involving heat transfer, fluids, valves, pumps, piping and component design for CE SYSTEM 80 standard PWR nuclear reactor plant and individual designs.

General Dynamics / Electric Boat Division: Groton, CT. Construction/Start-up Engineer. Prepared overhaul procedures and methods used in the repair and maintenance of operating submarine mechanical and fluids systems within reactor and engine compartments during overhaul and refueling. This included radiological assessment and the specification/design of special tooling and containment/environmental controls for radiological areas. Consulted with the original design agent/customer for approval of recommended repair methods and equipment modifications.
