The applicant, a 44 year old white male, has 23 years’ experience as a Tool, Jig & Diemaker and 20 years’ experience as a CNC Programmer/Operator/Setter. His experience is mainly related to the manufacture of plastic injection moulding, blow moulding, press tools, jigs & fixtures and forgings as well as heavy engineering, CNC programming and machining. He is equally experienced in the specialized selection of the various tool steels and other steels including heavy engineered castings and the heat treatment processes thereof. He also has experience in component/ jobbing manufacture.
He is an accomplished EdgeCAM 3D Milling & Turning programmer with 14 years’ experience behind him and attended a new interface course for the latest version of Edgecam 2016 R2.
After leaving DCD Ringrollers I sub contracted to various mould making companies namely, PC Plastics & Glentec Tool & Die for several months whilst waiting 7 months for the position I applied for at Scaw Metals.

I manufactured plastic injection moulds for the packaging industry ranging from 250ml tubs to 25L drums and much more. Highly involved in the tool design, material selection and heat treatment thereof. I was head of CNC machining department of which I personally programmed, set up and operated HAAS VF3, 4 & 5 machines supported by Fanuc controls and Edgecam. Access to and full use of center lathes, spark eroders, surface grinders etc. Precision machined tools at a hardness of 60 RHC. Manufactured press tools to punch out profiles on various components for the medical industry.
Achievements
I set up, designed in house moulding machines to allow for IML moulding (internal mould labelling) for ice cream tubs for Ola & Dairymaid etc. The machining of moulds had to be machined designed and adapted to suit this process.

I also did high precision machining of hydraulic components- jobbing/ production. I also manufactured aluminum vacuum moulds and trimming tools for the medical industry.
Achievements
It was a personal achievement for me to have satisfied a goal I had of owning my own business. Although most of my customers were highly satisfied and serviced 24HRS a day regarding production and breakdowns etc. one always gets that bad paying customer who virtually closed me down due to non-payment.

Battled with clients not paying- sold up and sought permanent employment for personal, family responsibility and security reasons.

As with any apprentice in any trade, started at the bottom. Thankfully I attended a technical high school and was very familiar with the conventional machines such as lathes, milling machines and surface grinders. I, along with the supervision of my journeyman at the time, was involved with the manufacture of plastic injection and blow moulds for the packaging industry- 2L milk bottles, sta soft bottles, 25L drums, deodorant caps and an immense amount of bottle tops. I was also involved in the manufacture of press tooling as required by the customer at the time. I attended a training college and various other courses as stipulated by the apprentice training board. I also started and attended technical college for my N4 to N6.
Achievements
I was the first apprentice to qualify first time round with my trade test at Olifantsfontein. I was also fortunate enough to be put onto CNC machines in my second year, namely Bridgeport Interactive & Deckel.
