Cover Letter of Shehzad Topiwala, MD, FACE Endocrinologist

After completing an ACGME/ABIM accredited Clinical Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at SUNY (State University of New York) Buffalo in June 2009, I joined a group practice in Lake County, Florida as Chief of Endocrine services. I relocated to Daytona Beach, Florida in September 2012 to join Vera Endocrine Associates. During my fifth year of practice in America I took a short break in November 2013, to explore final avenues of settling down in a big-city location like Orlando where I planned to start my own office. But an enticing offer from India came along and in 2014, I found myself Head of Endocrinology department at the nationally acclaimed SevenHills Healthcare City in Mumbai. It is one of the largest hospitals in Asia. In late 2017, I forayed into the Middle East, affiliating with the internationally reputed DHCC (Dubai Health Care City). However, I eventually relocated to USA from January 2018 by joining a comprehensive Endocrine-Diabetes Institute in northwest Florida. A 2001 Mumbai University MBBS graduate, I completed an Internal Medicine residency from CPS

(College of Physicians & Surgeons of) Bombay and a Diploma in Diabetology from Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital (through University of Mumbai), which is one of India’s (and indeed, Asia’s) finest teaching hospitals & academic institutions. The university program entailed training in the department of Endocrinology. Following this, I was a Consultant Diabetologist/ Bariatric & Cardio- Metabolic physician in private practice for some time until I was conferred with the prestigious IDF

(International Diabetes Federation) Award for a visiting Fellowship in US, as India’s first and only IDF Fellow. Thereafter, at the outset of my clinical fellowship I was bestowed with the coveted Lilly Endocrine Scholars award by the esteemed Endocrine Society (ES) at the annual ENDO meeting (Toronto, June 2007), granted annuto only 1 fellow nationwide across America. (Some years later, I was on the selection panel for reviewing applications for the same award for endocrine fellows in USA). During my fellowship, I was further honored with the Resident Professionalism Award, from over 700 resident physicians at University of Buffalo (UB), followed by a top departmental rank in the national 2

endocrine exam towards the end of my training. Whilst at UB, I served as Faculty in their School of Medicine as Clinical Assistant Instructor. In May 2013, I was recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE) at the annual convocation. I have over a decade of postgraduate experience. I am a well-rounded individual with excellent academic and co-curricular credentials, including sports, journalism, public speaking (multi-lingual), community service and leadership. As member of the Trainee & Career Development Core Committee of the ES I contributed to the shaping of clinical and curricular training of endocrine fellows in US. I also enjoyed serving on the AACE Technology Development committee for several years. I am well published, and serve as a peer reviewer for an indexed endocrine journal. For the next 2 years, I am on the editorial board of Endocrine News, ES’ flagship global magazine. I am formally certified in Bone densitometry, Neck Ultrasound & Thyroid Biopsies, Intensive Insulin therapy, & Laboratory Directorship. In 2013, Astra Zeneca Pharmaceuticals USA contracted me for their Speaker Bureau as Endocrine faculty to disseminate clinical knowledge of their diabetes portfolio to other health care providers across America.

I thrive in prolific activity (outpatient & indoor consults, satellite clinics, Interventional work: dynamic endocrine testing, thyroid ultrasounds and biopsies, zoledronic acid infusions, CSII / CGMS ie insulin pumps / glucose sensors, limb arterial Doppler, digital retina scans and ambulatory BP monitoring etc). I am driven to create a center of excellence in the region, catering to Obesity, Diabetes, Lipidology, Thyroidology & General Endocrinology.

Always charged about my work, I am a dynamic endocrinologist committed to evidence based medicine. I typify the new millennium physician, fully tapping technology to optimize health care delivery. I entertain patients as I have a penchant for fun. Flair for administrative work is another trait I cherish. Beside the most gratifying duty of managing a diverse array of clinical endocrine conditions, the ideal platform for me would be one with a blend of academics, teaching and clinical research. At the end of the day, I consider myself blessed with the opportunity to serve mankind, and I strive to do so in all humility.
