Major engineering responsibilities and expertise:

Improved powertrain energy efficiency, ATF, driveline lubrication, low friction engine, manufacturing technology, greenhouse emission reduction, and driveline compatibility;

Developed manufacturing processes, bench test protocol, engine performance testing, driveline testing, instrumentation set-up, F&L formulation, coolant performance evaluation, global specification, and production release;

Major Accomplishments:

(1)Led the advanced powertrain development including new propulsion system for improving fuel economy, greenhouse emission reduction, energy efficient F&L formulation, bench/engine testing & performance protocol, transmission efficiency, engine & driveline performance evaluation, and global manufacturing specification.

(2) Led implementation of piston skirt coatings for enhanced engine performance and durability. In meeting increased requirements for enhanced engine performance, reduced emissions and noise during early 1990s, the clearance between piston skirt and cylinder bore became extremely tight, which required much higher hot and cold scuffing resistance. Tung led the development and engineering test validation of the graphite/MoS2 composite polymer piston skirt coating technology and commercialization. The technology was first successfully used in a GM Premium V6 engine in 1995. Later, almost all the GM and other automotive OEMs used this technology for improved scuffing resistance. (2 patents)

(3)Improved aluminum engine wear resistance using my novel patents on wear resistant lubricants, surface coatings/textures design, and thermal sprayed coatings for Al engine blocks and piston skirts. (2 patents)

(4)Invented the novel transmission anti-shudder system and viscous damper clutch for improving driveline energy efficiency, NVH, drivability, and fuel economy of all Cadillac models. (1 patent)

(5)Successfully initiated and implemented modern green energy laboratory at GMR for advanced emission testing, CO2 capture and utilization technologies, project management review, and future strategy for green manufacturing process.

(5) Initiated the Consortium of GM and Chinese Institutions for Automotive Technologies. It was the first-of-its kind partnership between a multinational company (MNC) and a group of Chinese institutions. Served as program manager for the consortium, and helped form a technical project management process and led the strategic planning and final execution. Over 100 projects were completed under the consortium with many patents, publications, and industrial applications.

(6) Lead GM Discovery Project Team in charge of advanced cooling system for fuel cell and hybrid system development in 2001-2008; (2 patents)

5.Recently SAE has awarded three distinguished awards to me for my outstanding professional leadership: International Leadership Award (2015), Franz F. Pischinger Powertrain Innovation Award (2013), and Edward Cole Automotive Technology Innovation Achievement Award (2011).

Innovation

1.Total 14 patents on Advanced Energy Efficient Methods and Wear-Resistant Materials for Advanced Powertrain and Propulsion System.

2.Total 16 U.S. Patents and its formulation and methods for manufacturing these materials and lubricants used in advanced powertrain components which have improved friction reduction, wear resistance, and reduction of transmission clutch shudder noise and vibration.

3.The total cost saving created from my patents have been included over $80M annual cost savings, 15-20% lower mass, a 25% reduction in energy consumption requirements and product development cycle time. Its outputs have been integrated with the manufacturing process for more accurate reliability analysis. The energy saving methods have been used for new product design, and has also been used to troubleshoot production and launch problems.

4.Dr. Tung had almost fifteen years’ part-time teaching experience as adjunct professor at Wayne State, University of Michigan, Oakland University, and Tsinghua University (Beijing, China). My lectures at these universities include “Automotive Tribology and Driveline Technology”, “Automotive Manufacturing”, “Green Energy Technology”, and “Surface Engineering in Automotive Applications”. “Advanced Product Line Management”, “Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Storage”.
