I have been a past Chairman of the Ceramic Industries Association in South Africa.

I was Treasurer of the Federation of Master Printers of Zimbabwe, and was the employer representative on the Appeals Committee and Disciplinary Committee within the National Employment Council of the Printing Packaging and Newspaper Industry.

I was a member of the employer body for the Electronics industry.

Chaired an Employment Equity Committee at a previous company. A Consultant, David Robertshaw, sat on the Committee. The Committee’s work, together with David’s wider experience, influenced him to write a book with a colleague, Adele Thomas “Achieving Employment Equity”.

At a previous company, I was involved in an early attempt to introduce the concept of Relationships by Objectives into the workplace in South Africa. Mark Anstey, then Director of the Industrial Relations Unit at the University of Port Elizabeth published a draft paper on the subject entitled “Relationships by Objectives : Some early observations of theory and practice in South Africa”.

I came to these companies as a Consultant, and was asked to stay on as a permanent employee.

Green Fuel (Private) Limited has a sugar cane milling plant that produces ethanol and electricity, a logistics division that is responsible for mechanised agriculture, central stores, a workshop, and a Flexfuel Division. Macdom Investments (Private) Limited and Rating Investments (Private) Limited are sugar cane growing estates. Zimbabwe Bio-Energy (Private) Limited comprises crocodile, cattle and game ranching sections. Cargo Management Services (Private) Limited is essentially the head office activities. I left due to continued non- payment of salaries. At the time of leaving I was owed 6 months’ salary – which is still unpaid.

Responsibilities

Establishment of a centralised human resource function over the companies

Policy formulation and implementation

Management of industrial relations across the Agricultural, Construction, Engineering Iron & Steel, and Sugar Milling industry sectors, dealing with Unions and Employment Councils in these sectors, dealing with Workers Committees at all 3 companies. This includes discipline and grievance handling, and representing all companies at Conciliation and Arbitration proceedings.

Putting HR systems into place e.g. job evaluation, organograms, job descriptions and so on.

Establishment of a centralised Welfare function to manage accommodation, food, transport, clinics, pre-schools, primary and senior schools, sanitation and water and so on.

Establishment of a centralised Training function.

Management of almost 200 human resource departmental staff in the areas of payroll, human resources, welfare, clinics and canteens, Guest Houses and staff accommodation, training, transport, clerical and administration.

To monitor conditions of employment for a staff of approximately 4500 across the companies.

Celsys comms is the largest importer and retailer of cellular handsets and accessories in Zimbabwe, with retail outlets countrywide. Celsys print is the only privately owned security printing company in Zimbabwe. Celsys c-phone provides the equipment to establish private ‘phone shops’, and Celsys IT (Hardware) supplies and maintains ATM and point of sale machines, and Celsys IT (Software) distributes the Sophos anti virus and anti spam programme throughout Africa (excluding South Africa). Celsys marketing specialises in website design, online marketing and mailing list management. Celsys Limited was recently acquired by Lonrho plc, and has subsequently been acquired by Cambria.
