Education: University of Chicago/B. A., Ancient History

Work History:

1970/1972 City News Bureau of Chicago

Duties: Covering all facets of government news stories, i.e., City Hall, Police Headquarters, Board of Education, Criminal and Civil Courts, etc. and writing stories to deadline on all events deserving of coverage from those assignments.

1972/1995 Chicago Tribune Newspaper

During a 23 year career there, I covered three areas, each eight years in duration, i.e., investigations, the federal courts and the final eight years, covering the nation’s futures markets and counterpart financial exchanges overseas.

Awards: During my Trib career, I was the recipient of virtually every major award for excellence, including a Pulitzer, Associated Press, Jacob Schur, Edward Scott Beck, to name a handful. I was awarded the Pulitzer for my role in closing two for profit Chicago hospitals that were engaged in massive Medicaid fraud and patient neglect. Both hospitals Von Solbrig and Northeast Community were closed by the state and never reopened.

1995/1997 Chicago Mercantile Exchange

As Vice President in charge of global communications for the Merc, I oversaw a staff of twelve individuals whose responsibilities included pumping out daily press releases, publishing a monthly membership magazine, and fielding calls from reporters from around the world. My essential duties included: writing speeches and talking points for the exchange leadership; getting them before the right audiences, i.e., editorial boards and reporters; guiding them on marketing trips to New York and overseas; and arranging blowout press conferences in New York, South America and Europe.

1997/2013 O’Connell & Crawford LLC

O’Connell & Crawford LLC, which I co-founded, was a niche North Michigan Avenue public relations and crisis management firm which represented and shaped the public image of a wide group of clients. The latter included niche LaSalle Street futures brokerages, candidates running for statewide and local office in Illinois, Fortune 1000 chief executives, and exchange leaders in Chicago and New York.

2013/To Present

After my partner fell ill, our firm was disbanded in 2013. Since that time, I have been heavily engaged in freelance writing for an array of clients and recently published a nonfiction account of how a group of conspirators sent an innocent man to prison for years for a double homicide he did not commit. The wrongfully incarcerated man, Alstory Simon, was freed following 15 years imprisonment and is now suing his perpetrators for $40 million in federal court.

For the Record: I have taught journalism classes at virtually every college and university in the Chicago area, i.e., Northwestern, both graduate and undergraduate, Roosevelt, Columbia, DePaul and Loyola.
