Duties Performed in the United States

Surgical Staff Nurse

Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans

Conducts pre- and post-operative education

Serves as the communication liaison to family and members of the operating team

Takes and monitors patients’ vital signs

Ensures that operating on correct patient and the correct procedure is being performed

Provides basic, bedside care

Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse

Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol

Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms

Preps operating room for patient/procedure

Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology

Monitors patients’ physical and emotional well-being throughout the care continuum

Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their post-treatment home care needs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation

Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting

Select and place of x-rays for reference

Assist in moving and positioning of patient

Place pneumatic tourniquet

Confirm procedure with surgeon

Drape patient within surgeon’s guidelines

Provide retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization with regard to tissue type and appropriate retraction instrument and/or technique

Assist in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, use and application of appropriate surgical instrument for the task, placement of ties, placement of suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other measures as directed by the surgeon

Use electrocautery mono and bi-polar

Clamp, ligate, and cut tissue per surgeon’s directive

Maintain integrity of sterile field

Close all wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous and skin) as per surgeon’s directive

Insert drainage tubes per surgeon’s directive

Select and apply wound dressings

Assist with resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life-threatening events in the operating room

Perform any other duties or procedures incident to the surgical procedure deemed necessary and as directed by the surgeon

Surgical Procedure Assisted in the United States

Robotic: total laparoscopic hysterectomy, supracervical hysterectomy, low anterior resection, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic sacral colpopexy, and transoral robotic surgery.

Laparoscopy: cholecystectomy, appendectomy, total hysterectomy, sigmoid colectomy, low anterior resection, diagnostic, tubal ligation, and salphingoophorectomy.

Orthopedic: total joint replacement ( hip, knee and shoulder), open/ closed reduction and internal fixation, arthroscopic surgery, surgical femoral head pinning, tendon repairs, and nerve entrapment (carpal tunnel, trigger finger) procedures.

General Surgery: colostomy for malignancy and ischemia, splenectomy, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, low anterior resection, mass excision, inguinal/ umbilical hernia repair, and hemorrhoidectomy.

OB/GYN: hysterectomy, colpopexy, repair of cystocele and rectocele, tubal ligation, cesarean section, and salphingoophorectomy.

Vascular: thrombectomy, av fistula for dialysis, femoral-popliteal bypass, carotid endarterectomy, and vein stripping

ENT: tonsillectomy, parotidectomy, excision of sublingual/submandibular mass, thyroidectomy

Neurosurgery: craniotomy/ craniectomy for bleeding and tumor resection, ventriculoperitoneal shunt, anterior/ posterior cervical discectomy with fusion and instrumentation, posterior lumbar laminectomy/discectomy with fusion and instrumentation, and anterior lumbar interbody fusion, with instrumentation.
