5.“ANALYTICAL MODELING OF RESIDUAL STRESS IN RAILROAD RAILS AND MEASUREMENT OF ACOUSTOELASTIC CONSTANT IN RAIL STEEL WITH COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS MODULE.”
Residual stresses are evolved in the railroad rails during manufacturing. Although residual stresses evolve in various process steps during manufacturing, the most significant sources are roller straightening operation. These residual stresses are modified when the railroad rail is placed in service, due to the repeated passage of train wheels. The most noticeable change in residual stress in railroad rail during service is observed in a region near the running surface, especially extending up to about 20mm into the rail head. These residual stresses increase the occurrence of fatigue cracks and stress corrosion cracks. The ability to evaluate the residual stress would substantially increase the accuracy of structure life estimation and the security of operation.
The basis of the measurement is the stress induced anisotropic behavior caused by nonlinearities in the strain displacement and constitutive relations which have been experimentally confirmed for several materials. The acoustoelectric effect refers to the changes in the speed of elastic waves propagating in a body which is simultaneously undergoing static elastic deformation. Here we are concerned with the measurement of the acoustoelectric effect and third order elastic constants (which define the constitutive relationship for an initially isotropic material), up to the second order) for steel typical of that found in railroad rails.
