OVERVIEW:
I am a well-rounded corporate communications professional with nearly 35 years’ experience at a leading international healthcare company underpinning my latest venture as head of my own communications consultancy. Having earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications and a master’s degree in Journalism, I honed my skills in business and general-assignment news reporting and financial publishing. I then took an entry-level position at Roche and worked my way through the ranks, serving first as an individual contributor and then in assignments where I managed professional and administrative staff ranging from small teams up to as many as 30 people. My career has spanned executive speechwriting and editorial management, crisis communications, corporate and product PR, organizational change programs aimed at achieving strategic alignment and employee engagement, as well as corporate branding programs that have enhanced my company’s reputation as an attractive investment, employer, supplier and strategic partner. I have served more than five U.S. and global CEO’s with disparate styles and personalities and have had excellent relationships every one. My strengths include excellent analytical skills, world-class written and verbal communications, and unparalleled capabilities of consensus-building across businesses, cultures and continents.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
2017 – Present MDH COMMUNICATIONS LLC, New York, NY
President
Upon retirement from Roche after a 35-year career with the company – the last 16 at its
global headquarters in Switzerland, I returned to New York to start my own consultancy.
My services include: Eexecutive Visibility and Personal Branding; Strategic Messaging;
Corporate Positioning; Brand Journalism; Change Communications; Issue- and Crisis-
Management; Communications Training; and Fast-Turnaround Content Review, Editing
and Quality Assurance.
2001 – 2017 F. HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE LTD, Basel, Switzerland
Vice President, Senior Adviser & Business Partner, Group Communications
After working at the company’s U.S. headquarters for 20 years, I was asked to take on an international assignment at global headquarters in Switzerland aimed at bridge-building across Roche American affiliates and the parent company, and strengthening the corporate brand and visibility in the world’s biggest healthcare market. This role required me to act as a liaison between global headquarters in Switzerland and North American business operations, among the U.S. affiliates, and between the Pharmaceuticals and Diagnostics Divisions and the Corporate Communications and Investor Relations functions. Results included significant increases in Roche Group media coverage in top-tier outlets such as CNN, CNBC, Fox News, Bloomberg, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Business Week and Forbes. In addition, during the course of my assignment, Roche earned widespread recognition among media and investors for achieving a major turnaround and was cited by one American research organization as having the most improved reputation in the industry in 2003. Following this successful expat assignment I signed a local contract in Switzerland and worked in several global communications roles, including Head of Regional Communications aligning affiliates around the world, and Senior Adviser & Business Partner, ensuring high professional standards of for the communications function worldwide and helping to ensure consistent global messaging and best practices. My team founded the Roche Academy of Business Communications, providing company-specific training to leaders and staff, and established the foundation for a comprehensive approach to reputation management.
