Objectives:

My job is end-to-end database solutions. Including but not limited to: database architecture / processes: The ability to see through architecture, development, scalability, and performance tuning of high volume OLTP/OLAP databases & data warehouses with a “Big Data” foundation (800GB - 1TB+) ensuring database availability 24/7. Creating processes for mission critical database systems such as: Backup / Restore, Machine, Server, Instance, and Database level monitoring to be proactive in foreseeing issues with these systems, and deploying processes to prevent them from becoming issues. Documentation for the overall good of the company including onboarding new members of the database group, and providing the leadership and mentoring they need to hit the ground running and exceed expectations.

Data Availability: Consuming, processing and reporting on data regardless of source, and making it available for analytics, decision making, sophisticated reporting, ensuring the data delivery ahead of time with complete accuracy; above all, making it fast and eliminating fluff. With over 17 years dedicated specifically to the database field, designing and implementing database systems for some of the largest data sets in every industry (Large Retail: Wal-Mart, Clorox, Universal Studios, Government: Army, FEMA, DoHD, Casino / Gaming : MGM, Stations, Borgata) data models, ETL processes, data warehouses, systems architectures, relational databases, with a constant concern for efficiency as a certified Database Administrator, I enjoy putting all this experience together to design, develop, and deploy infinitely scalable database solutions.

Lead Database Architect

Trailstone Group LLC Austin, TX

August 2016 – Present

Summary: Responsible for all database platform development supporting the end to end profit and loss system for a multibillion dollar hedge fund. Automated process flow and moved it on to next generation technologies using SQL 2016 with “poly-base” technology to offload cold data, and query processing to cloud based servers. Minimized traffic across the web ensuring traders get accurate data in real-time before their trading day starts, with ample time for analysis. Designed and Developed “DataSmart” a platform used by our traders to perform point in time analytics, predictive analysis, and time series analysis to provide key decision-making metrics. Database performance tuning, indexing patterns, stored procedures, triggers, and architecture are all part of my position making sure the data is always ready and available and ensuring a 3-5 second return time on 100+ TB databases for all reports, requests, and queries. Explore budget and forecast new database server specifications, tooling for process automation, and directing development for next generation solutions.

Highlights: Brought report deliver times down through a complete indexing overhaul from over 2 hours to under 10 minutes. Forecasted, budgeted, developed and delivered “DataSmart” under budget which provided both a new archival strategy removing system threatening growth, and provided a new robust platform to give traders current and predictive analytic capabilities increasing the hedge fund value by 19% through said analytics. Overhauled and refactored systems which were struggling to run 10,000 transactions per second to now running 188,000 transactions Dr. John Trumbul Jr. Austin, TX **@***********.*** 479-***-**** Page 2 of 4 per second on average with no hardware cost increase. Saved the company $800,000 annually by tuning existing systems allowing for a reduction in over 100 cores on existing databases machines saving the 8k per core license fee. Built the reporting system out from ad-Hoc scripts taking near 17 hours and delivering incomplete information to a full reporting system being utilized by over 30 analysts across 2 offices and countries, with zero down time.

Architecture: Both Traditional RDBMS (SQL SERVER 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 R2 including “Always-On” availability group functionality, NoSQL solutions : Couch Base, BI-Tools : Tableau and Directed the company to move reporting into Red Shift) I lead the technology suggestions, under the hood administration of each, process and database / data modeling, deployment, and hired (from resume vetting, to phone screen, to technical interview design, trained, and lead the database group) to get them up and running with minimal downtime and learning curve narrowing. Interfaced with the business, in house technical staff, and external domestic and international partners to make sure all of the company’s data needs were met. Scheduled meetings, brown bags, lead talks, and brought innovative suggestions to the table in order to make sure the company stayed current and ahead of its growth.
