Asst.Researcher at Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF)
Community Care For People With Schizophrenia In India (COPSI) project
(16-3-2009 to 19-11-2011).
About the Project:
COPSI is a randomized controlled trial comparing the clinical and cost
effectiveness of facility based (usual) care and a collaborative
community based care intervention for people with schizophrenia in
three sites in India. The outcomes of interest include symptoms,
disabilities, adherence with treatments, experiences of stigma and
discrimination, family burden and family members' knowledge of
schizophrenia. These are assessed at baseline and at the endpoint (12
months). The community intervention is developed by a team comprising
the treating Psychiatrist, the Intervention Coordinator and lay
community health workers and the majority of the service is delivered
in home settings. A package of evidence based treatments has been
selected for the community intervention that can be delivered by CHW's
with adequate training and close supervision.
My Role:
> I had to assess one hundred and five patients. Appointments had
to be fixed with the caregivers and patients.
> The process proceeds by an Initial visit (baseline) to their
houses, followed up by every six and twelve months (End line).
> Information was collected through rapport building and
assessment based on scales with both Caregiver and patient.
> Care giver and Patient were assessed and interviewed
individually. Separate scales were used for them.
> The Scales were Indian Disability Evaluation and assessment
Scale, Burden assessment schedule, Knowledge About Schizophrenia
Interview, Measuring adherence, Cost of illness inventory,
Discrimination and Stigma Scale, Socio-demographic details,
Willingness to disclose illness,Stigma and Euroqol.
> These Scales were assessed to know how far the Care giver have
knowledge about the illness, about their burden, how much they
have spent for the illness, about their socio-economic details
and about their psychological problems they have faced.
> These Scales were assessed to know how far the patient had
awareness about his/her physical hygiene, whether he/she has
been discriminated due to his /her illness, whether she/he had
faced any stigma, how their family members take care of them
and treat them.
> Scores are computed through these scales, which enables to find
the results for the project.
> The collected data was fed to the computer and documented.
> I have done presentations on the research papers on psychiatry
as a part of my organizations activity, which had helped me to
improve my knowledge and awareness with regard to this field.
