About The Project:

TLM IDC & CBR project has been in existence since July 2003 with its

focus on rehabilitation services to Leprosy affected persons and

differently able people in the rural and urban areas of the Viluppuram

district. The first phase of the project completed on 31st December

2008. Extension of this project is being carried out during the years

January 2009 to December 2010. This phase focuses its intervention to

support the differently abled people and Leprosy affected persons in

21 blocks and 3 municipal councils of Viluppuram district expect Vanur

Taluk where another NGO is working. This District has a population of

3 million; the Disability population as per district census of 2007 is

27,541. During Phase I the project covered 1/3 of the disability

person population in the district and has facilitated the formation of

826 self help groups (SHG) for the persons with disabilities including

the leprosy affected persons. Through the newly registered "New Life

Differently Abled Peoples' Federation" the SHG members were able to

access the mainline resources from the Government and other NGOs.

During the coming 3 months focus will be on supporting the federation

in becoming an autonomous, economically viable organization to provide

services to the differently abled persons in the district. All

activities under the programme will be implemented through the

Federation.

My Role:

> Monitored the work of three Community Development Organizers.

> Helped in planning and implementing various programmes.

> Helped in Community Organization, liaison with government and

non government agencies.

> Involved in awareness and advocacy.

> Overseen the Socio-Economic Rehabilitation aspect of the project

in 10 blocks in vilupuram District for persons with Disability.

> Involved in capacity building programme of the community

volunteers and the Community Development Organizers.

> Helped in Resource mobilization and Public relations.

Asst.Researcher at Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF)

Community Care For People With Schizophrenia In India (COPSI) project

(16-3-2009 to 19-11-2011).

About the Project:

COPSI is a randomized controlled trial comparing the clinical and cost

effectiveness of facility based (usual) care and a collaborative

community based care intervention for people with schizophrenia in

three sites in India. The outcomes of interest include symptoms,

disabilities, adherence with treatments, experiences of stigma and

discrimination, family burden and family members' knowledge of

schizophrenia. These are assessed at baseline and at the endpoint (12

months). The community intervention is developed by a team comprising

the treating Psychiatrist, the Intervention Coordinator and lay

community health workers and the majority of the service is delivered

in home settings. A package of evidence based treatments has been

selected for the community intervention that can be delivered by CHW's

with adequate training and close supervision.

My Role:

> I had to assess one hundred and five patients. Appointments had

to be fixed with the caregivers and patients.

> The process proceeds by an Initial visit (baseline) to their

houses, followed up by every six and twelve months (End line).

> Information was collected through rapport building and

assessment based on scales with both Caregiver and patient.

> Care giver and Patient were assessed and interviewed

individually. Separate scales were used for them.

> The Scales were Indian Disability Evaluation and assessment

Scale, Burden assessment schedule, Knowledge About Schizophrenia

Interview, Measuring adherence, Cost of illness inventory,

Discrimination and Stigma Scale, Socio-demographic details,

Willingness to disclose illness,Stigma and Euroqol.

> These Scales were assessed to know how far the Care giver have

knowledge about the illness, about their burden, how much they

have spent for the illness, about their socio-economic details

and about their psychological problems they have faced.

> These Scales were assessed to know how far the patient had

awareness about his/her physical hygiene, whether he/she has

been discriminated due to his /her illness, whether she/he had

faced any stigma, how their family members take care of them

and treat them.

> Scores are computed through these scales, which enables to find

the results for the project.

> The collected data was fed to the computer and documented.

> I have done presentations on the research papers on psychiatry

as a part of my organizations activity, which had helped me to

improve my knowledge and awareness with regard to this field.
