Project Details: 2 nos of IIT Second year B.Tech. students of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, Mr.G.Karthik and
Mr.Hemant Kumar were deputed to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, for carrying out a Project as an academic
requirement. The students were allotted a Project on Intergranular corrosion of Stainless Steels.
Heat Treatments and Experiments:
Austenitic Stainless Steel samples were solution annealed at 1050 C for 1 hour and the samples were sensitized at various
temperatures within the temperature range 425 C to 800 C for various exposure times. The sensitized samples were subjected to
Pr.A of ASTM A 262 and the resultant microstructure was microscopically examined and results were recorded.
Reporting:
A report was prepared for presentation to IIT.

INDUSTRIAL RADIOGRAPHY
Worked in Industrial Radiography of SS304L plates and welds in a Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Project prior to joining
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, India, for 31/2 years.
Work done at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, India. : -
1. ULTRASONIC TESTING:
Worked in Ultrasonic testing of billets of Natural Uranium for our Research Reactors, SS End Fitting forgings, Weldments, etc.
for 12 years.
2. MICROSTRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION AND OPTICAL METALLOGRAPHY:
-Worked in Atomic Fuels Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, in Microstructural Characterization of Zirconium-Tin and
Zirconium-Niobium Alloys' tubes, Natural Uranium Fuel Elements, etc.. Metallographic Examination of Zircaloys' Encaps welds,
Spot welds of Control Blades, SS weldments,etc. Inclusion Rating of Uranium fuels, SS wrought products,etc. and Grain size
measurement.
3. METALLURGICAL FAILURE ANALYSIS:
Metallurgical Failure Analysis of failed Pressure vessels comonents, Ball bearngs, Leaking Weldments, Process components etc.
with various modes of failure such as Corrosion Related, Mechanical Related and Corrosion Mechanical Related modes of
failures by means of Optical Metallography, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Mechanical Testing and Micro / Macro

III. AWARDS:
a) International Best Paper Award for the paper titled " Ultrasonic characterization of IGSCC in Austenitic Stainless Steel Welds"
presented at World Conference on NDT in December, 1996.
b) Prize for metallograph exhibited in the Metallography Contest conducted on the eve of 44TH Annual Technical Meeting
(ATM) of The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) in November,1990. The metallograph was showing microstructures for Zircaloy-2
welds, done by TIG welding, Electron Beam Welding, Ultrasonic Welding, Resistance Welding and Laser Welding.

V. SKILLS:
PROJECT HANDLED:
2 nos of Second year B.Tech. students of Metallugical and Material Engineering of The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee,
Mr.G.Karthik and Mr.Hemant Kumar were deputed to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, for carrying out a Project as an
academic requirement. The students were allotted a Project on "Intergranular corrosion of Stainless Steels". I was working as a
Guide for the project. Work involved heatreating of circular Austenitic Stainless Steel Samples of 20 mm dia x 5 mm thickness
and of SS304 grade for Solution Annealing at 1050 C followed by water quenching and Sensitization at 575 C, 675 C, 775 C,
for 5, 20 and 60 minutes respectively followed by air cooling. The solution annealed and the sensitized samples were subjected to
Inter Granular Corrosion Test as per Practice A of ASTM-A-262 . And the resultant microstructure was observed under
microscope at suitable magnification. A project Report was prepared and sent to the Department.

a) Attended a Refresher Course on Welding Technology at Central Workshops, BARC, Mumbai, on 6th-9th November,2001.
b) Attended a National Seminar and Workshop on Failure Analysis (FA2000) held during May, 11-13, 2000 at the Indian Institute
of Technology, Mumbai.
