2. Heavy Water Board, Mumbai
Recovery of Uranium from Phosphoric acid
Literature Survey, Process selection and optimization, Plant design and
Simulation with software like HYSYS, selection of equipments,
presentations and documentation, knowledge transfer etc. Description:
With the urgent need of Uranium it is up most priority to work on
alternate sources of uranium other than conventional resources.
Phosphoric acid is one of the sources which are used by fertilizer
industry. U content in the 28% WPA is 50-200 ppm. Heavy Water Board is
setting up Technology Demonstration Plant at RCF, Mumbai. This involved
setting up micro mixer-settler and bench scale facility at Heavy Water
Plant, Talcher. Based on operational results of these facilities, basic
engineering package for TDP is done. I was also involved in preparation
of process flow diagram, preparation of P&ID, equipment design and
specification sheets, Basic and detailed engineering, plant layout,
safety systems etc.
3. Nuclear Fuel Complex, Hyderabad
Separation of Uranium from Uranyl Nitrate Raffinate Cake (UNRC)
Study of Uranium Separation Processes, Plant visits, identifying the
opportunities for Separation, Literature survey, Lab Scale Experiments,
Analysis of Results, Inference and Documentation, Knowledge Transfer,
etc.
The fuel for nuclear reactors (PHWR) is Uranium oxide sintered pellet.
For the fabrication of Uranium oxide, ore concentrate in the form of
Magnesium Di Urinate (MDU) is dissolved in Nitric acid to obtain crude
uranyl nitrate solution (CUNS). The CUNS is treated counter currently
with 33% TBP balance kerosene solvent in a 10-stage slurry extractor.
Uranium is extracted in organic phase and the aqueous raffinate is
precipitated with caustic lye solution to neutralize and filtered. The
cake, containing about 1% of uranium has been accumulated over 2-3 years
of operation in more than 10,000 drums. The project is to develop a
method to extract the valuable uranium from it and reduce the volume of
cake and make it suitable for land filling.
