Character and Culture: Stories of a summer cross-cultural experience in Swaziland.

Co-researcher with a cross-cultural volunteer experience that involved 250 college students from four different cultures. This research utilized pre-and post-experience measures of humility, gratitude, unforgiveness, self-esteem, social desirability, narcissism, self-deception, and cultural attitudes. It included a debriefing interview and a photojournalism project in which students reflected on their cross-cultural experience, community impact, and personal growth.

Researcher, Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, California, 2002-2006

Dissertation: How does cross-age mentoring impact mentors: reflections on student self-perceptions of leadership, spiritual-character development, and concepts of the future.

This qualitative research examined the powerful positive effect that a summer weeklong camp experience had on junior high leaders who were cross-age mentors for 125 students in grades 1-5. The adolescents participated in a leadership development program and served as mentors in a positive character education community learning experience.

Led and helped administrate teams of college age students in community teaching, indigent care and ultimately supported, coordinated and built a donated U.S. playground given to a needy community through Kids Around the World organization.

Co-leader of a volunteer service-learning team of 125 college students who joined college students from Zambia, Swaziland, and South Africa to form a group of 250 students who taught HIV/AIDS prevention in the public schools, planted vegetable gardens, provided community resource and relief work. Participated in a cross-cultural musical exchange program as a vocalist in a choral ensemble from California State University, Northridge that placed first in overall choral performance for the United States in the International Festival.
