NEXT GENERATION FLIGHT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Client: Boeing (747-8), Gulf Stream (G650)

Team Size: 20

Duration: Jul 2010 - 15th March 2013

FMS is an embedded system, which runs on RTOS. FMS will communicate with

other on board equipments to provide navigation and guidance support to

pilot. It serves as a guidance and navigation computer for pilot in all

phases of flight by automating navigation, performance computation, flight

planning activities, data link communication, lateral and vertical guidance

functions.

NGFMS is an ambitious program by Honeywell with a view to exploit

reusability feature of Object Oriented paradigm. NGFMS is a software

product line (SPL) that maximizes benefits of commonality across market

specific products. The NG architecture is organized into layers, with each

layer having a distinct purpose & the below layers providing services to

the layers above it. It is basically regarding designing a Flight mgt

system that will be platform independent i.e. that can be used in the

planes of all the Honeywell clients i.e., Airbus, Boeing & Gulf Stream. So

it will help in reducing the redundant work that is done for all the

clients separately,i.e., No need to separately design a new FMS for each

client, as only platform specific files will need to be changed. Major

issue while designing the FMS will be on the variation points between

different aircrafts & giving some common interface to the various variation

points.

Scenario Management

This package manages the creation of flight plans and the subsequent

transformation of these plans that are used to provide "What if" scenario

information. Flight Plans for scenarios are synonymous with Flight Plans

for the User except that Scenario Flight Plans are created by the system

instead of the user.

Scenarios represent the means of obtaining "What-if" information to present

to the User Interface, such as

. Distance, time, fuel to the closest airport

. Distance, time, fuel if an engine out were to occur on a specified

flight plan

. Distance, time, fuel to an alternate airport (from aircraft or

diversion point)

The Scenario Management package supports the instantiation of a Scenario

Manager to facilitate the creation of a scenario flight plan(s), an initial

aircraft state, and orchestration of the trajectory based on the scenario

flight plan, and obtaining desired results for the scenario of interest.

The package includes a collection of Jobs which represent scenarios

supported by the system. It is the Jobs which define the scenario, the

flight plans created from it and the resulting information relevant to the

scenario.

The scenarios are created by the system to support the jobs. The scenario

may be a new flight plan based on current aircraft position (direct from

aircraft to some reference point) or a modification of an existing pilot

defined flight plan (Alternate airport from a diversion point within a

flight plan).

Responsibilities:

> Lead the package.

> Actively involved in fetching the requirement baseline from Teamcenter

for particular package.

> Involved in analyzing the requirement and code complexity for complete

package.

> Involved in estimation of files and allocation of files to Test

engineer.

> Provided technical and debug support to test engineers.

> Communicated defects with developer and ensured all the defects had

been accepted and all the resolution .

> Involved in Unit and Integration Testing, Regression Testing.

> Involved in analyzing the requirement and source code and prepared

Test plans.

> Involved in Test Case Design, Test Case Execution and Review.

> Involved in reporting the defects using ClearQuest.

> Involved in Checkin activity using ClearCase and CVS.

RADIO MANAGEMENT

This subsystem determines the appropriate station to tune each radio based

upon 1) searches of the Navigational Database for stations with the best

geometry to calculate position, 2) stations which are called out by

procedures in the "active" Strategic Flight Plan or 3) manual tuning

selections entered by the crew. The Radio Manager also monitors inputs

from each radio to determine the frequency/Channel that the radio is tuned

and determines the associated station to which the radio is currently

tuned.

Responsibilities:

> Writing the Test Cases (C++ Code) by referring Requirement documents.

> I am the technical focal for the ASL_RAD team.

> I have worked on resolving complex issues w.r.to RAD package.

> Mentoring new team members.

> Helping the V&V team to know about the functionality and writing

drivers to test the functionality.

KSN770 (King's Safety Navigation) is a Multi Functional Display (MFD) which

provides a real-time view of a map representing the area surrounding the

aircraft. The primary purpose of the display is to generate moving maps,

terrain, flight plan, weather information, traffic, and navigation

information to the pilot on the same screen. This Project deals with the

complete requirement based testing of KSN770 display software.

Responsibilities:

> Analyzing the business and functional requirements specifications

documents.

> Identifying scenarios for automation and developing of those scripts.

> Involved in the automation scripts preparation using VB script on QTP.

> Involved in developing User Defined Functions.

> Involved in testing the module manually before automating a test plan.

> Involved in Design and Development of Automation Framework.

> Involved in execution of Test Cases and development of functional and

regression Test scripts using QTP.

> Involved in Team reviews.

> Tracking the defects and reporting the defects using defect tracking

tool.

> Detecting bugs & classifying them based on the severity.

> Responsible for submitting Test case execution summary report.
