PERSONAL STATEMENT
PASTORAL CARE PHILOSOPHY: As a spiritual caregiver my goal is to respect and honor each individuals belief system. I believe that all people, no matter what their spirituality or lack thereof, are engaged in a spiritual journey that often comes more fully alive in the state of crisis. My pastoral role is to come along side others in crisis as a companion on the way as they marshal their own spiritual resources to meet the challenges of their present need. I believe that as I establish a relationship with persons in need through my empathic and non-anxious presence, a space can be opened in which that person can begin to make meaning of their circumstances and find healing for the spiritual pain that they are facing.
THEOLOGICAL IDENTITY: I was born and raised in the Reformed Church in America and have served Reformed Churches and institution as a Minister of Word and Sacrament for 20 plus years. I was pastor of a church in the Albany, NY area before beginning my residency at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Personally, my theology is moving away from the Calvinist tradition in which I was raised. I am comfortable in ecumenical and multi-religious environments and have an openness, appreciation, and fascination for the wide variety of spiritual expressions.
DIVERSITY EXPERIENCE: I was raised in a very diverse racial and ethnic environment in Westchester County, NY. My experience at Hershey Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center, was an opportunity to engage people of many faith and cultural backgrounds. I find the wide diversity of the hospital population and opportunities for spiritual care in the diverse hospital setting to be an energizing experience.
