Dear Hiring Manager,
My relevant qualifications include my B.S. in Biology. My current job position as a Research Assistant for the University of Houston in the Biology/Biochemistry Department has solidified my desire to continue working in the research field. I work with a Ph.D. candidate to construct and execute experiments concerning the evolution of Harvester Ant morphology. My daily tasks involve identifying larvae and pupae at a particular developmental stage, collecting data concerning each colony's progress, feeding the ants, and monitoring the colonies health. Some tasks involve highly detailed observation such as measuring each ant's head width just before eclosion. I use excel to organize all collected data to present to my supervisor. While working as an assistant, I conducted my own independent research in which I developed a method for transplanting colonies reared in the lab back into their natural habitat in hopes to stimulate population growth, a population that has been declining over the years. Starting my own research project pro bono has led me to be extremely resourceful (i.e. contacting local businesses for donations) and has exercised many critical thinking skills necessary for developing novel methods. I presented a poster/talk to the Honors College and community in which I gained experience in communicating to various individuals the importance of this species' preservation.
Though my current research is of evolutionary biology, my interests lie in the medical field. I hope you will find that I am well prepared to make this transition. With my education and experience combined, I am certain that I will be an excellent addition to your department. I can be reached for an interview at your convenience.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
Very Respectfully,
Stephanie Rice
