Activities
July 9, 2007- " Old South Baton Rouge"
In the summer of 2007, I entered a Human Ecology & Horticulture program at LSU which allowed us to make hot sauce preservatives from natural peppers. At the end of the program, Mayor Kip Holden presented each and every individual who participated in the program with award and certificates for getting involved with the community. I even made the newspaper (The Advocate),, and local news station!
Two dozen entrepreneurs from McKinley High School are bottling and packaging hot sauce. They also cultivate and grow the peppers for next year's production. The Summer Experience is sponsored by the LSU Ag Center and the Islamic Complex. The youngsters learn nutrition, farming and cooking--along with other things, like the hazards of bottling peppers.
"We are actually dealing with non-artificial flavors," says Sheriny Chism. "It's all natural flavors, and the peppers are real, so when you get some on your hands or it sticks to your clothes and sticks to your skin, it irritates it real bad. It burns, so you really have to watch what you're doing."
But the real benefit seems to be the people skills they pick up.
Doretha Ray says, "I think I'm getting--working with other people, because I'm not good working with people so working with them is a good experience--different types of personalities and I'm happy working with them. It's fun, it's very fun!"
The kids learn business, selling "Old South Baton Rouge Hot Stuff" at the Islamic Complex farmers market on Washington Street Thursdays and Saturdays. Sheriny says. "It's really nice. You get to work with customers and things, and you get to also learn how to sell things and how to communicate with different kinds of people from different areas of south Baton Rouge."
All this and each student earns 500 bucks for the summer experience. "Old South Baton Rouge Hot Stuff" comes in red and green pepper sauces. They sell for three dollars a bottle, and the McKinley students say sales are as hot as the peppers.
