Peter I Morton
Qualifications
I have ** years experience in Manufacturing Engineering and
Management in both heavy engineering and pharmaceutical industries. My
strengths include appreciation of and cooperation with legislative
authorities such as the FDA and WSA (Australian OSHA equivalent), knowledge
and appreciation of HACCP and GMP requirements involved in the production
of both pharmaceutical and food products. I also have a passion for change
and improvement and have had significant success in this area at every
position I have held as detailed below
Work Experience
2000 - Present Maintenance Manager, Tasmanian Alkaloids (Johnson &
Johnson) -Westbury Tasmania, Australia
I am the Maintenance Manager responsible for the maintenance of a
large pharmaceutical facility manufacturing 200 million
dollars a year worth of Morphine and Thebaine API s as well
as 1500 tons per year of food grade poppy seed for use in
the world wide culinary market. The nature of the business
necessitates frequent audits ranging from the FDA and TGA
(Australian equivalent to the FDA), ISO certification and
Health and Safety compliance, through to corporate and
customer quality audits. During my 10 years here, there has
never been a finding against the Maintenance department.
During my time here I have also vigorously attacked costs
and subsequently reduced the site maintenance cost from
$5.7 million dollars annually to $3.1 million. These
achievements have resulted in considerable recognition and
I have presented papers on "Maintenance Optimization" and
"Working with Manufacturing" in Asia, Europe and the US at
other Johnson and Johnson facilities. I am now heavily
involved in Lean implementation having recently been
appointed as the site Lean Maturity Assessment leader.
1999 - 2000 General Manager, Salisbury Engineering - Launceston Tasmania,
Australia
I was the General Manager responsible for the running of a well
established fabrication and machining workshop. These
responsibilities included Quality Control, Production
Management, Sales and Marketing, Site Health and Safety and
the financial management of accounts. When I took on the
role, the business was in serious decline and bordering on
trading whilst insolvent. Over the 14 months there I
managed to double the output whilst reducing costs through
aggressive cost control and a well planned marketing
strategy. Unfortunately the owners of the business chose to
close the business and sell off all assets rather than
invest any capital funds to support the business or sell it
to another party to carry on. Whilst not successful in
keeping the company afloat I was able to double the output
whilst reducing operating costs in a very short period.
1997 - 1999 Manufacturing Manager, ANI Bradken - Launceston Tasmania,
Australia
I was the Manufacturing Manager responsible for the
production planning in a medium size foundry producing
castings ranging from 10kg to 500kg using sand molds. The
main focus of my activities was based around productivity
and safety as the facility was struggling to meet the
competition as far as production costs and was crippled
with the costs associated with frequent accidents and
injuries. I led a site implementation of the Dupont Safety
system in conjunction with a company-wide initiative with
very positive results.
1992 - 1996 Maintenance Engineer, ANI Bradken - Runcorn Queensland,
Australia.
I was the Maintenance Engineering Manager responsible for the
maintenance activities of a very large steel foundry
producing castings for the mining and transport industries
with sizes ranging from 200kg to 21 tons each. During this
time I focused on productivity aspects of the Maintenance
department in line with a site wide implementation of
"Crosby Quality Management" through Proudfoots. As a result
of the changes, availability of all key equipment was
raised to between 98% and 99% whilst lowering maintenance
costs by 40%.
1989 - 1992 Apprentice Maintenance Fitter and Turner / Part time student
Queensland University of Technology, ANI Bradken - Runcorn
Queensland, Australia
I received my initial training trough completing an apprenticeship in
Maintenance Fitting and Turning whilst studying part time
for an Associate diploma in Mechanical Engineering. The two
strands of study, one heavily practical and one heavily
theory resulted in an ideal mix as the two complemented
each other so well. I received exemplary results in both
and finished the 4 year part time Associate Diploma in 3
years and had my term of apprenticeship formally reduced
due to my exemplary results.
