Andrew Laing has been involved with Irrigation Engineering throughout
Southern Africa since 1995, on most types of commercial crops. His
particular spheres of interest are the design, installation, operation and
maintenance of Irrigation and Drainage Systems with particular attention to
the application of technology appropriate to the requirements and
capability of the farmer/client.

Agricultural Engineer responsible for the agricultural engineering on a
5400 ha sugar cane estate. These included management of all irrigation
operations (1070ha Center Pivot, 550ha Overhead Floppy and 3780ha Flood).
Topographic surveys using both total station and RTK GPS. Land leveling
operations using laser technology, including design and optimization of
field slopes and cut and fill volumes. Management of four teams involved in
relining of the existing canal sections with a gunite machine and the
survey, design and construction of new canal sections. Including design and
installation of canal structures, such as inverted siphons, long crested
weirs and control gates. The design of pump houses for flood and overhead
irrigation schemes. Generation of tender quantities and documentation,
liaison with sub-contractors and quality assurance during irrigation scheme
installation. Maintenance planning for irrigation plant, this included 14
pump sites with 31 pump units and 19 center pivot machines. Implementation
of OHS regulations. The cost of the agricultural rehabilitation project for
the sugar estate was US$7.5 million.

system design and costing, installation and commissioning. Introduction and

R30 000 to R1.2 million.

responsible for farm survey with total station, client liaison, scheme
design and costing, installation and commissioning. Use of DTM and Wacadi

Design Engineer reporting to the Managing Director. Feasibility study for
the creation of a pneumatic waste handling equipment business. Industrial
visits, system design, costing and manufacturing methods. Organization of
evaporative air-conditioning installations and design and installation of
acid fume wet scrubber system.
1995. Overland Expedition
Organized and participated in private overland trip from London, through
Europe, into the Middle East and Africa, ending in Cape Town.
1994. Airmat Systems
London, UK
Specialist company, dealing with the design, manufacture and installation
of pneumatic waste handling systems, including exhaust air filtration. The
main forms of waste being paper, card, tissue and board products. Contract
Engineer reporting to the Contracts Manager. Responsible for all aspects of
installation from site survey through to commissioning. This included
system flow analysis, manufacturing specifications to sub-contractor
manufacturers, installation and commissioning. Systems were on occasion PLC
controlled with Allen Bradley equipment and software. Contract values were
typically 10 000 to 60 000.

Mechanical Engineer reporting to the Contracts Director. Responsible for
design and drawings for all post tensioning components and hydraulic
jacking equipment. Quality appraisal of suppliers and development of
company quality assurance procedures. Management of yard maintenance staff
and spares inventory. Implementation of database for spares. Site equipment
failure analysis and component redesign and improvement. Design through to
commissioning of 3m-diameter reinforcing mesh rolling machine and on site
construction jig.

Trainee vacation work in the aluminium extrusion and cable production
plant, reporting to the Plant Engineer. Undertook projects on cable drum
drive modifications, component design for a wrapping machine and did a
technical appraisal of the plants storm water effluent management
facilities.

the drawing office and production of engineering drawings for the
manufacture of injection and blow mould tooling. Trainee in the plastics

molding and maintenance departments.
