EXPERIENCE

March 1, 2010 to current: Hatfield Marine Science Center, Newport, OR

Student Contractor with USGS

Duties Performed: I research introduced species of the west coast in order to expand the PICES database.

This means going through manuals, research papers, and other databases in order to find out information such

as where the introduced invertebrates, plants, and fish came from, when they were first reported in the west

coast, and what were the vectors of their arrival to our coast. Also, I helped with field work for another USGS

employee working on marsh plants vegetation in a project to try to predict the effect of sea level rise on its

distribution.

September, 2009 to January, 2010 – Environment Oregon

Canvasser

Duties Performed: I went around the neighborhoods to inform people about some environmental issues facing

our wildlife and telling them of the legislation being considered to help alleviate the problems. I also

suggested ways that the general public can help in their own lives in order to make a difference.

Divemaster

Lead Diver for the interpretive dive team at the Oregon Coast Aquarium: Summer of 2009 (first program at

the O.C.A.) – current

Duties Performed: Operate the full face mask (including removal and replacement of the mask) and

microphone equipment to address audiences of about 100 from the shark tank (which includes residents such

as seven gills, leopard sharks, and bat rays) about sharks and the threats that face these marine animals. I also

help with the training of the new recruits including an assigned mentee.

Volunteer Diver at the Oregon Coast Aquarium: 04/2008 - current

Duties Performed: Clean the acrylic, vacuum the walls, scrub the walls, check the fish to insure that there

were no sick or injured animals in the tank, capture sick animals that need treatment as well as those used for

experiments. I am a safety diver in the shark tank as well which means protecting the other divers in the shark

tank by redirecting the shark’s path of travel away from the divers.

Lab Work: 2007 to 2008 in the Bill Cresko Lab at the University of Oregon

Duties Performed: Fin clips, DNA extractions, PCR reactions, prepared the gel and performed the gel

electrophoresis procedure, bleached and dyed the bone structures of the fish, performed inventory, and
