On completion of my first bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, in 1982, I joined the Air traffic Control Division of the Bandaranayake
International, Sri Lanka, as a trainee air traffic controller.
During the thirteen years from 1982 to 1995,initially, I served at Aerodrome Control Towers at both BIA and Ratmalana airports and
Colombo Area Control Center(ACC), and, later, at the Approach Radar Control unit BIA. I posses “ Air Traffic Control license”, issued
by the DGCA – Sri Lanka which had continuous validity from 1983 to 1995 - the time I left ATC to join Airport Management.
ADDED QUALIFICATIONS :
a). I have been functioning as the Chairman of the Emergency Awareness Committee of Colombo International since 1997, to date,
the committee vested with the task of educating airport users and staff on :
1). nature of the emergencies that to occur in an airport
2). their supposed responses to them, and the mechanism to assist passengers and visitors in such situations, and,
3). their involvement at Annual Emergency Exercises conducted as per ICAO requirement, and periodical rehearsals
I have been trained to handle and am conversant with handling airport emergencies. I have handled quite a number of emergencies
occurred at Bandaranayake International . Several of them were of very critical nature: main undercarriage failure, engines on fire in flight, tire burst on take off roll, Terrorist Attack situation etc.
I am a founder of preparation of the Colombo Airport Emergency Plan which is in effect now.

LIST OF DUTIES OF THE PRESENT EMPLOYMENT:
The following are among the principal duties performed by me at present in the capacity of Assistant Airport
manager which is a Senior Executive position in the team of Airport Management at the Bandaranaike
International Airport(B.I.A.), Aand Ratmalana airports, Sri Lanka.
1). Exercising supervision, overall airport operations there by establishing and maintaining efficient working
relations with airport users, and forecasting traffic and movements.
2). Ensuring that the aircraft movements and maneuvering areas are kept safe and effective operating conditions.
3). Maintaining a high level of efficiency in providing the services and convenience facilities in the terminal such
as telephones, toilets, rest rooms, medical facilities available to the passengers, enabling them to go through
airport formalities without effort and restraint.
4). Training and developing a highly competent staff.
5). Upgrading the moral of the employees by arranging periodical meetings with the staff of different categories,
note down their grievances if any, amend the current instructions suitably if necessary or draft fresh instructions.
6). Appraising staff and submitting reports periodically.
7). Budgeting for supply rosters for the staff to various sections functioning under the purview of Airport
Management.
8). Conducting disciplinary inquiries when allegations are made against subordinate employees and preparing
investigation reports.
9). Formulating air side safety and operating procedures and ensuring enforcement of safety standards, publishing
apron traffic code for users, organizing accident investigation committees, formulating and enforcing apron by-
laws.
10).Monitoring progress of air side operations, issuing NOTAMS, inspecting pavements,check serviceability
and remove and clear obstructions in accordance with ICAO standards, reduce and control procedures, issuing
air side driving permits,correct computation and charging of landing and parking charges, evaluating and
establishing an Apron Control Unit at BIA.
11). And the second airport at Ratmalana which serves as the main domestic hub of Sri Lanka, in addition to the
above functions the ground handling division also under my purview.
