facilitate large purchases, as well as marketing and sales to schools and

office, on my own schedule. I transitioned to Yamaha one year ago.

programming, board development, budget development, implementation and
oversight, program and brochure writing, production and distribution, venue
contracting, artist contracting. Oversaw all aspects of Bachanalia, the
fundraising auction held each year to support the Northwest Chamber
Orchestra. Responsible for all fundraising, including writing all grants,
providing final reports, and implementing grants. Supervised staff of 4,
with approximately 20 volunteers. Responsible for developing and overseeing

charge of student activities; responsible for registrar, head of library,

planned and produced faculty and student concerts. During my time at the
Colburn School I began a program called Summer Encounters which brought
students from financially disadvantaged areas of Los Angeles into the
school for a two week camp. I also began the Distinguished Faculty Series,
and expanded the Theater Department to allow it to incorporate Mime and
Movement. I successfully recruited world-class teachers to the piano, voice
and violin departments.
American Pianists Association, Indianapolis IN
Director (1997 - 2001)
Managed all aspects of several jazz and classical piano competitions;
restructured the organization and the mechanisms used to identify the
finalists; increased audience by more than 100%; organized several
festivals, a jazz kitchen concert series, an outreach program into twelve
Indianapolis area schools called the Concerto Curriculum, and a classical
series; arranged more than 100 concerts in the United States and as far
afield as London and Japan for the winners of the competitions; assisted in
fundraising efforts, specifically by instituting a Great Homes/Great Music
program, a raffle, a series of Jazz Brunches, and a series of other
performances, master classes, and workshops. During my time at the APA, the
format of the competitions was totally revised to reflect my dislike of
head-to-head arts competitions, an endowment was begun when I arrived which
had nearly $2 million when I left, and the organization, by any account,
was much, much stronger and healthier than it had been when I took over.
The Philadelphia Orchestra, Philadelphia PA

Organized the series of Family and Children's Concerts; organized the
Sounds All Around program for very young children; organized and ran a

Philadelphia; produced a newsletter, managed a small staff, served on many
artistic and general planning committees. Attendance was increased by 20%
during my tenure as Director of Education
Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, Kalamazoo MI
Artistic Director (1986 - 1994)
As a consultant for the Gilmore Foundation, I developed a unique non-
competitive format for identifying and rewarding gifted pianists. As the
Artistic Director I was responsible for all aspects of the festivals
(artists, venues, contracts, etc.), for managing a budget of $1.6 million,
and for identifying the artists both who participated in the festivals
themselves and who were recipients of the awards given. Artists such as
Van Cliburn, Alicia de Larocha and Leon Fleisher participated, as did a
number of lesser-known up-and-coming young performers. I commissioned a
number of works, from composers such as Curtis Curtis Smith, William
Bolcom, and Ned Rorem. I ran the searches for the award recipients, booked
the festivals, participated in all aspects of pr, marketing, fund raising,
and so on, and ran a large staff. Each festival consisted of over 100
performances spaced out over half a dozen cities. Concerts were
consistently sold out. My work with the Festival was reported upon
favorably by, among others, CBS Sunday Today, Firing Line, the New York
Times, and NBC Sunday Today. Joseph Horwitz' book The Ivory Trade also
devoted a section to the Gilmore Festival.
Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo MI
Associate Professor of Piano (1980 - 1988)
I served as a member of the piano faculty, teaching studio piano, keyboard
harmony, and general piano class and methods classes, and had a very
successful record of performing and teaching. I was granted a promotion and
tenure before I left to run the Gilmore Festival. While at the University I
played hundreds of concerts, participated in hundreds of chamber music
performances, and organized two tours to Europe with violinist David
Updegraff. I also produced and performed a cd of the Piano Music of Richard
Bromley.
