Twelve years of varied experience in the mental health field includes

counseling substance abuse patients in both individual and group settings,

screening and recruiting patients for research studies, conducting

comprehensive assessments, and managing research projects.

Home-based interviewer

September 1994- August 1996

Conducted telephone interviews with managed care consumers regarding

service utilization.

University of Penn/PVAMC Center for studies of Addiction- Philadelphia, PA

Substance Abuse Counselor

September 1988- January 1992

Managed caseload of approximately 28 opiate patients. The emphasis of

counseling sessions was substance abuse education and behavior

modification. Updated treatment plans and made referrals as needed.

Monitored and recorded urine and BAC results. In addition, counseled

cocaine patients as part of a substance abuse research project. Held

sessions 2-3 times weekly and recorded progress in charts.

Addiction Severity Index (ASI) trainer

August 1987-April 1990

Trained substance abuse counselors and other mental health professionals in

the administration of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI), a semi-structured

assessment tool. Observation and critique were included as a part of

seminar. Assisted in development of ASI fifth edition instrument and

manuals.

Psychology Technician

December 1984- September 1988

Performed daily psychological interviews, evaluations and follow-up

consultations on substance abuse patients. Assessed treatment needs of

substance abuse patients with the ASI. Conducted extinction sessions with

opiate and cocaine-addicted patients. Acted as a liaison between the VA

Substance Abuse Treatment Unit and three Philadelphia methadone programs.

Trained new research personnel on compiling and organizing data. Conducted

evening recovery group for substance abuse patients.
