Emotional and/or Behavioral Problems
Program Director (2010-2012) / Residential Manager (2009-2010) / Assistant
Director (2008-2009)
Recreational Therapist (2007-2008) / Supervisor (2006-2007)
Served in five increasingly responsible roles in a "fast-track" career
progression. As Program Director, managed the efforts of 90 employees in
a 22-bed residential treatment facility for adolescent girls, managed under
the auspices of the Juvenile Justice Wing of the State of Connecticut
Department of Children and Families.
. Turnaround - Quickly recognized by senior management for capability,
maturity, integrity, effectiveness and dedication to the mission of the
organization. At time of hire, the facility was in a state of disarray,
with significant staff turnover and poor morale. Physical interventions
were a commonplace occurrence, workers compensation coverage was nearly
impossible to get, and there had been multiple publicized arrests of
clients initiated by staff.
. Leadership - Assessed the situation and put into practice the lessons of
leadership, crisis management, communication and continuous skill
development which had been integral to my years of service with the New
York Police Department. Instituted a calm, client-centric approach. Led
by example. Trained and mentored staff members.
. Results - Within two years, physical interventions had been cut by 50%,
workers compensation claims had been cut by 80%, staff turnover was
minimal, and staff-initiated arrests reduced by 90%+. Recidivism rate
among clients was reduced from nearly 50% to almost 0%. A genuine
culture change had been successfully accomplished, which positively
benefited everyone connected with the unit.
