Causes of modern imperialism
The major industrial countries of Europe, United States and Japan,

all acquired colonies in the 19th century.
Places taken over were Asia, Africa, the South pacific, and Latin
•
America
Imperialism: Is extending a nations political and economic
•
dominance or control over another country
Leaders wanted to be positive that they had enough materials for
•
their factories
All these needs were met by controlling colonies
•
Empire Building in the 19th century
Europeans moved into these new places ( asia, Africa, Americas),
•
bringing their goods and ideas with them
1500s 1600s This is when European expansion had reached its

peak
Military might, industrialization and technology had given European
•
nations enormous power and influence throughout the world
Imperialism in Africa
Europeans took African land for colonies, by 1900 almost all of
•
Africa was in European ownership
The French wanted to stop pirate raids in the Caribbean
•
Great Britain had the greatest portion of Africa
•
Dutch farmers were called Boers resented British rule
•
When trying to settle in new territory, they bumped into a group of
•
Africans called the Zulu
The Zulu were later defeated
•
The Boers took their land and later diamonds were discovered, this
•
area became the best source of diamonds in the world
Germany and Italy came late into the race for colonies in Africa
•
King leopold of Belgium owned a lot of central Africa
•
In 1908 the Belgian government forced him to give up the land
•
because the Africans were being treated extremely cruel
It was then controlled by the Belgian government
•
The British were searching for a product to sell to chin because
•
they imported more than they exported
They found a drug called opium which would accomplish the aim
•
The Chinese got addicted to the drug
•
China officials tried to stop the trade by destroying 20,000 chest of
•
opium
Resulting in the Opium war

British responded to this by sending troops and ships to invade

purchased Alaska from Russia
Victory over spain in the Spanish-American War gave the

U.S. control over the Philippines islands and Guam
War of 1898 convince the U.S. that it needed a canal for
•
natural defense
1903 the United states negotiated an agreement with
•
Columbia to allow the U.S. to build a canal across panama
The United states given the right to build and operate a
•
canal in panama
The U.S. also dominated the governments and economies
•
of other Latin American countries through a policy called
the Dollar diplomacy
This policy encouraged united states businesses to invest
•
the development of countries and to build factories in
them
