Chief, Veterinary Services

Supervisor: CPT Jennifer Wojtaszczyk 913-***-****)

Okay to contact this Supervisor: Yes

Supervised 5 Soldiers and an Iraqi Bicultural Bilingual Veterinary Advisor (IBBVA) to provide expert,

mission-centric and adaptive Civil Military Operations, Clinical Operations, Combat Stress Control,

Preventive Medicine and Veterinary Service support operations to 15 detachments in Iraq. This support

encompassed 133 operating bases with over 260,000 U.S. Service Members, Coalition partners,

Department of Defense civilians, contractors and third country nationals. I served as the battalion

commander's technical advisor on all veterinary issues in Iraq. I was instrumental in bringing 2 Therapy

Dogs into Iraq. I finalized a standard operating procedure for the use of dogs in therapy, the veterinary

care of the dogs and a metric to measure the effectiveness of the dogs in a combat setting. This was

the first time in history that animal assisted therapy was used in a deployed setting to help relieve

combat stress of Soldiers on the battlefield. My work was critical to the Force Protection Dog (FPD)

medical program that fully engaged preventive medicine assets to work with veterinary assets to

reduce the health risk presented by these dogs to the troops. The program directed the preventive

medicine assets to identify and register new FPDs they encountered on site visits and contributed to

an 83% increase in the number of dogs de-wormed and vaccinated. I supervised the unit’s IBBVA on

projects in support of training the Iraqi Army on food safety and multiple veterinary issues; consolidated

21 Force Health Protection functional tasks for health service support to Coalition forces in support of

Multi-National Corps-Iraq full spectrum operations and the development of partnerships with Iraqi

Security Forces; completed a mission analysis for the Iraqi Theater of Operation Veterinary Support

mission that directly contributed to the approval of full Level III animal care capability including surgery

for the first time ever in a combat zone; provided critical warzone feedback to the Army Medical

Department Center and School for a new course for food inspector’s pre-deployment training and

preparation; created a first ever workload and trend analysis for combat stress control, preventive

medicine and veterinary services that provided trends for decision making and optimized these

footprints in Iraq; selected to train 9 courses for a detachment struggling with leadership and equal

opportunity issues resulting in a drastically improved work environment; trained 146 Soldiers in 4

companies on medical threats associated with deployment to minimize operational and combat stress

casualties; contributed to an Army Medical Department journal article, “Protecting the Force” that

educated Soldiers on the diverse role of food inspectors and veterinary assets in a combat zone and

protected Soldiers against zoonotic diseases. (Contact Supervisor: Yes, Supervisor's Name: CPT

Okay to contact this Supervisor: Yes

I supervised, trained and mentored 86 military and civilian personnel arranged in 15 duty sites over 4

states. I was responsible for leadership, personnel development, training and mentorship. I developed

and supervised annual lesson plans for professional development for unit personnel. I planned,

coordinated and trained two annual training events that encompassed life skills and job proficiency for

food inspectors, animal care technicians,non-appropriated funds receptionists and military and civilian

veterinarians. I provided training and guidance to reserve units deploying to Iraq and indoctrinated

recently accessed veterinarians to their responsibilities in their new jobs. I managed the EduNeering

Program, a program designed to track the progress of credentialing for animal care technicians.

Following the disaster of Hurricane Ivan on the Gulf Coast, I realized a need to improve evacuation

procedures for command and control for assigned personnel and their families, as well as over 30

military working dogs in my area of responsibility. I authored a force protection evacuation plan that

was endorsed by my superiors. This plan was thoroughly tested during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita

and was found to be very effective. During the Hurricane Katrina recovery period, I played a crucial role

of assisting Army animal care technicians to stand up and man an animal rescue center. Our team

located and procured several facilities to be utilized as animal shelters for over 200 misplaced animals.

I appropriately requested donations and volunteer support from outside agencies and individuals to

support this endeavor. I oversaw the management of the outreach program that identified owners with

pets, through the use of microchips and developed a website with pictures of lost pets and their

location. The shelters remained operational for more than two months after the disaster with all animals

returned to their owners or adopted. I also managed the inspection and disposition of 5 tons of donated

domestic and international rations to Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

As a lead quality assurance auditor for the Army Veterinary Command I performed initial sanitation audits to determine

the sanitary status of commercial food establishments for the first time. These audits approve or disapprove the

establishments as sources for the Armed Forces. The initial sanitation audits were complete sanitation audits of the

facilities, production procedures, and sanitary control systems of the establishment. The initial sanitation audits were

made in the presence of the management (or representative) of the plant. During the exit interview, I advise

management or its authorized representative of any audit deficiencies found and request corrective action as applicable

through a Corrective Action Request. I advised management of the normal approval process, based on current Major
