EDUCAT ION:
California I nstitute of Technology . BA in Computer Science. I n progress.
EXPER IENCE:
UN ITED STATES GOVERNMENT
Algorithm Developer (2013)
• Developed novel algorithm to predict global atrocities (ie. wars, genocide) from large
sets of sociopolitical interaction data
• United States government’s Agency for International Development purchased my
a lgorithm for use in a network that helps control over $4 billion in international relief and
d rastically improves the lives of over 16 million people annually
ZEKIRA.COM
Android & Web I ntegration Developer (2012-present)
• Developed components for every aspect of a complex personal search engine combining
cloud, Android, and desktop frameworks.
• Specialized in integrating oauth-based web services such as Gmail and Twit ter with
t he application to display web-based user content.
• Designed and created half of the Android interface
• Buil t Java code to communicate with large Lucene databases stored in the cloud
• Learned everything college doesn’t teach from two ex-Apple executives.
UN ITED STATES COMPUTING OLYMPIAD
11th R anked in grade in the US
• Successfully competed in the United States Computing Olympiad’s algorithmic CS
contests.
• Obtained a solid understanding of techniques and algorithms such as dynamic
p rogramming, minimum f low, shortest path, greedy algorithms, minimum spanning t rees,
and many others.
• Learned creative problem solving skills to quickly dismantle challenges.
BOSTON UN IVERSITY
Machine Learning Research I ntern (2012)
• Designed and built a system for controlling an Android tablet with hand gestures
performed by a user wearing a TI Chronos wristwatch.
David Mace • Page 1
• Developed novel machine learning algorithm variants to classify as gestures the
acceleration vectors sent wirelessly from the wr istwatch.
• Published two scientific publications as the main author and two Android
applications.
PUBL ICAT IONS:
D avid Mace, Wei Gao, and Ayse K. Coskun. “ Improving Accuracy and Practicality of
Accelerometer-Based Hand Gesture Recognition”. In 2nd Workshop on Interacting with
Smart Objects, in conjunction with the ACM International Conference on Intelligent
User Interfaces (IUI), 2013.
David Mace, Wei Gao, and Ayse K. Coskun. “ Accelerometer-Based Hand Gesture
Recognition using Feature Weighted Naïve Bayesian Classifiers and Dynamic Time
Warping”. ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI), 2013.
HACKATHONS:
HackTech Organizer (Fall-Winter 2013)
• Part of a four person team currently organizing a 1,300+ person hackathon
scheduled for next January in southern California
• Responsible for finding corporate sponsors, organizing food, t racking finances,
p ublicizing the event, and renting out the Rose Bowl
Pennapps Finalist (2013)
• Awarded Top 20 team out of 2000+ initial applicants.
• Built chrome plugin to allow Facebook friends to sell goods to each other in a
more structured and safe format on Craigslist.
• Designed and implemented multifaceted algorithm to calculate user t rust metric
based on interaction quality between Facebook friends.
• Currently working with University of Pennsylvania to turn hack into a feasible
p roduct that will be used by college students across the country.
M Hacks Best iOS App Award (2013)
• Built an iOS app where users could play pacman on top of webpages, with the
game edges formed along the content edges.
• Designed and implemented algorithm combining Canny edge detection, Hough
l ines, and my own code for line segment end detection and contiguous map
formation from disjoint line segments to determine pacman game board from the
web page.
• Assisted setup of backend AWS instance that ran my java algorithm through
Node.js.
