ACADEMIC PROJECT:

Title: “Scrap cost reduction in Spider grinding process”

Duration: 3 months.

Description: In today’s Manufacturing industries, the major problem facing is the

‘Scrap’ of the product. The word ‘Scrap’ means, ‘Rejection’ of products in a manufacturing

process. The scrap rate increases the manufacturing lead time, reduces the production rate and

increases the production cost. The scrap of the product is the total wastage of Time, human

power.

‘Spider’ is the part in the halfshaft, which is meant for transmitting the Power and Torque

developed in the engine of the vehicle to the wheels efficiently.

The main aim of our Project is to reduce the scrap rate in the grinding of spider as well as

to increase the production rate

Previously, the production rate of spider component was 450 parts/shifts .and Average

scrap rate was 10%.and Average scrap cost, Rs 41,000/- in 2012.

. By proper analysing the causes and root causes for the scrap production and by the

solution suggested and implementation, 65% of scrap rate has reduced. And that inturn reduced

the scrap cost.
