Compliance Officer – Biffa Waste Services; West Sussex Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) Plant –
September 2010 – July 2013
* Heavily involved throughout the construction and start up phase of the new MBT facility ensuring all elements of the West Sussex MRM contract (Materials Resource Management) is adhered to and no payment deductions result, paving the way for a first class operational service.
* Develop both training and commissioning plans to ensure a smooth transition from construction to operational phases of the project and full involvement from regulators.
* Responsible for implementation of a comprehensive EQHS (Environmental, Quality, Health and Safety) Management Systems to obtain and maintain the external accreditations such as ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001 which are required by the West Sussex MRM contract. Additionally responsible for conducting internal auditing and inspection to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, tracking issues until resolution.
* Trend analysis and reporting elements of project performance to regulators such as local Planning Authority and Environment Agency.
* Researches and implements energy saving projects with regards to buildings, facilities, heating, lighting, compressed air, motor and pump controls / drives

* Provided operational management at one of Biffa’s busiest and most prestigious landfill sites ensuring the safe, efficient disposal of Sussex and Surrey’s waste. This involved day-to-day management of the site team (along with recruitment of staff) and any contractor undertakings.
* Management of customers, public and regulators in all facets in relation to the running of the site.
* Tendering and appointment of engineering works in relation to cell construction and infrastructure works

* Maintained the site’s prestigious EMAS (Environmental Monitoring Accreditation System).

* Proactively managed environmental monitoring - sampling of gas, ground water, noise, dust, asbestos, odor, surface water and leachate (contaminated water) with results reported to regulatory bodies for 6 landfill sites.
* Provision of environmental expertise to site management in relation to fault identification and trend analysis.
* A requirement of this role was to collate data for analysis and look for trends; with a view to identify problems and introduce improvements or advise on remediation measures that need to be introduced.
Major Contributions:
* Led sites through major environmental regulatory change and laid down foundations for compliance monitoring - Techniques still in current practice.
* Produced site specific environmental monitoring plans and introduced new standard operating procedures to reduce and minimize monitoring errors.
