Coursework Details
• In Ergonomic Engineering, I studied the design of equipment and ways to make it better for the person and improve safety and efficiency. Through research, I presented examples in class of how eliminating risk areas (bent wrist, pinch grip, bent lower back) in the workplace improves conditions. In addition, I had a hands-on experience with an adjustable workstation and what risks were resolved or remain after the adjustments.
• For Six Sigma, I studied cases that involved the use of Critical to Quality and Tree diagrams to determine problems, such as defects in injection molded lenses or excessive medical waste. I presented these in class and explained how the use of these tools and the Green and Black Belt system worked to minimize flaws and save time and money.
• In Lean Manufacturing, I studied techniques like the 5S (sift, sort, straighten, standardize, sustain), just-in-time (JIT), and continuous improvement systems and demonstrated their applications in the real world. Research and presentation projects included Lockheed Martin as an example with their chemical handling, where point-of-use storage and JIT eliminated excess and expired chemicals, and allowed the consolidation of resources. Healthcare examples featured similar methods to eliminate waste and improve organization.
