The Water Treatment Plant Mechanic ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the City's water treatment facilities through skilled mechanical maintenance, program support, and staff collaboration. This position combines technical expertise with active participation in maintenance planning, budgeting, and asset management. The Mechanic performs and oversees maintenance on pumps, motors, chemical feed systems, and related process equipment; coordinates with contractors; and supports capital improvement planning in partnership with the Utilities Superintendent. The role also provides training and guidance to operators, promotes teamwork across divisions, and ensures compliance with safety standards, including Lockout/Tagout and confined space entry. By balancing field work with program-level responsibilities, the Mechanic contributes directly to the long-term reliability, performance, and safety of Golden's water treatment operations.
JOB SUMMARY
Perform skilled preventive and corrective maintenance on water treatment plant equipment, including pumps, motors, valves, blowers, compressors, and chemical feed systems.
Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations.
Conduct routine service tasks such as lubrication, alignment, and replacement of seals, bearings, and other mechanical components.
Assist with electrical troubleshooting and coordinate with electricians, controls staff, and contractors to resolve complex equipment issues.
Implement and refine preventive and predictive maintenance programs, including vibration analysis, temperature monitoring, and oil sampling.
Plan, schedule, and document maintenance activities in asset management software; track equipment histories and recommend replacements based on condition and performance data.
Maintain inventories of tools, spare parts, and supplies; assist with purchasing and vendor coordination.
Support maintenance planning, budgeting, and capital improvement projects through technical input on equipment condition, repair priorities, and reliability improvements.
Coordinate and oversee contractors performing specialized maintenance or repair work to ensure compliance with City standards and safety regulations.
Train and assist operators and maintenance staff in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and safe work procedures.
Respond to emergency equipment failures and process interruptions; participate in on-call and after-hours response rotations.
Follow and enforce all safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, and chemical handling requirements; actively participate in safety meetings and reporting.
Assist in developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and related documentation to support compliance and safe operations.
Work collaboratively with operators, supervisors, and other staff to maintain effective communication, teamwork, and a culture of safety and reliability.
Recommend process or equipment modifications to improve performance, extend asset life, and reduce downtime.
Help perform water plant operations as needed. May include water plant rounds, observing plant operations, assists in the shut-down and reactivating of treatment plant equipment and performing a variety of duties pertaining to water treatment and plant maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) and three years full time mechanical maintenance experience including pumps, motors, electrical, and plumbing. Two years' experience in water/wastewater facilities or similar industrial settings as a plant mechanic preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Journeyman or master plumber's license preferred. Asset Management Certifications or training are desirable but not required. Must pass the Class "D" water treatment exam within two semi-annual testing cycles. Valid driver's license and a good driving record required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in the maintenance of equipment and machinery including pumps, valves, and motors. Principles and practices of hydraulics related to the pumping, transmission and distribution of water; proper chemical handling methods; practices and techniques of metal cutting and welding desired. Knowledge of trouble shooting of line and signal voltage.
MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED
Hydraulic lifts; electric, manual, pneumatic and mechanical valves; variable, high and low speed motors; submerged, centrifugal and piston driven pump systems, PVC, steel, ductile iron, stainless steel, iron, galvanized, aluminum and copper piping; all wire gauges, high and low voltage equipment, concrete, paint, lumber and structural hardware; band saw; drill press, grinders, vice, hydraulic jacks and electrical hoists; hand tools and instrumentation of electrical, carpentry pipefitting, millwright, plumbing disciplines, gas and diesel generators; computers keyboards/terminals, printers. Possession of own tools, a plus. Various chemicals used in treatment plants: powder activated carbon, polymer, KMNO4 (potassium permanganate), FE2(SO4)3 (ferric sulfate), Sodium Hypochlorite, Sodium Hydroxide.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to operate tools and equipment up to 50 pounds, hear alarms, ascend and descend vertical ladders and steps. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
