Summary of Job
Performs custodial work and maintains library building and grounds. To ensure success, the employee will uphold the established core competencies of communication/customer service, professionalism/leadership, productivity/teamwork/attendance, job knowledge and following policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
1.CUSTODIAL/JANITORIAL: Maintains appearance of building and grounds
Performs routine custodial tasks, as conditions or scheduling requires
Assists in emergency situations that call for immediate and custodial attention, such as bodily fluids, blood borne pathogens (BBP), hazardous materials, or unusual restroom scenarios. Acts as the lead building contact when building conditions warrant emergency personnel to be on site
Performs emergency duties and provides resources needed in times of weather-related issues such as icy conditions, snow removal, mopping of interior entry ways and vacuuming carpets
Assists in setting up layouts for library programs or private events 2. MAINTENANCE: Ensures maintenance and security of patrons, staff, buildings and grounds
Enforces the library's policies and procedures and works to support safety and security of the library building and grounds
Proficient in the library's primary security systems, such as camera surveillance, fire/smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and intruder alarms
Assists in maintaining the library's small engine equipment such as snow blower, lawn mower, etc.
Assists in maintaining the library's building and internal operating systems such as HVAC, electrical, roof, etc.
Regularly interprets and chronicles maintenance logs for all support systems vital to the safe and efficient operation of the building, such as HVAC, elevator, fire/security controls, grounds, etc.
Assist in both small and large-scale project management, requiring a basic understanding of blueprints as well as construction methods and terminology 3. OPERATIONS: Oversees minor operational duties as needed.
Assists in minor supervisory duties of seasonal or volunteer staff
Completes a monthly report of work activities and project progress
Authorized to contact vendors/contractors during emergencies or when situations necessitate professional mediation
Assists in formal demonstrative or informational presentations to the library board, library management team, the public, or where deemed necessary
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities
Must be at least 18 years old
Preferred: Three to five years related experience Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to represent the library in a responsible, professional and trustworthy manner
Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment
Ability to maintain a calm demeanor under stressful or unsettling circumstances
Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to work efficiently while paying close attention to detail
Ability to multitask and prioritize
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with staff, contractors/vendors, other city department staff, board/council members, and the general public.
Ability to meet the flexible scheduling needs of the library
General mathematics skills
Ability to perform minor repairs on maintenance equipment
Must be adept and knowledgeable in the use, performance and application of cleaning chemicals and tools
Basic general computer skills, including keyboarding, word processing and email
Ability to use library and general office equipment, including computer, printer, photocopier and telephone
The City anticipates filling these positions pending Committee approval and funding.

The City of Manitowoc is a qualifying Public Service Loan Forgiveness organization.
Non-represented positions are governed by the Library Employee Policy Manual. Employees in non-represented positions are at will employees.
POSITION: This is a non-represented position.
SICK LEAVE: Employees will earn six hours of sick leave per month and can accrue up to 960 hours.
HOLIDAYS: New Year's Day, Spring Holiday (1/2 day), Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve at a pro-rated basis.
FLOATING HOLIDAYS: Full-time employees receive 3 days of floating holidays per year.
VACATION:
1st through 5th year 80 hours
6th through 10th year 120 hours
11th through 20th year 160 hours
After 20 years 200 hours
HEALTH INSURANCE: Medical (with a HSA), Prescription, Dental, and Vision plans. Manty Health and Wellness Clinic. Insurance begins the first day of the next month following 30 days of employment.
LIFE INSURANCE: Offered through the Wisconsin Retirement System. Employee pays first month's premium, employer pays remaining 11 months. Coverage is equal to employee's annual salary to next $1,000. Additional coverage available at employee's expense.
WISCONSIN RETIREMENT SYSTEM: Begins immediately upon employment. Employer pays employer's share of employee's salary. The employee contributes the employee's share of the employee's salary.
FLEXIBLE BENEFITS PLAN: Allows employee to set aside pre-tax deductions for dependent child care and medical expenses not covered by insurance.
PHYSICAL EXAM, DRUG TEST, AND BACKGROUND CHECK: Required of all newly hired employees, paid for by the City.
RESIDENCY: No residency requirement.
MISCELLANEOUS BENEFITS: Tuition reimbursement, short-term and long-term disability, accident insurance, critical illness insurance, Employee Assistance Program, deferred compensation plans for additional retirement savings, and Edvest-College savings plan.
