Description

The College of Arts & Sciences seeks an enthusiastic and creative colleague to join the Mass Communications Department as an Assistant Professor of Mass Communications, teaching undergraduate courses in their area of specialty. This position is a 9-month, 4/4 teaching load with the possibility of summer teaching and overload teaching as it's available. Consistent with the University's commitment to diversity, we seek a candidate who will demonstrate a commitment to implementing and learning about instruction that addresses issues of equity, advocacy, belonging, and community engagement.

The successful applicant for this teaching-focused position will be expected to teach both theoretical and practical classes in mass communications, as well as serve as an academic advisor to students.

The candidate will develop and teach introductory and advanced courses in one or more of the following areas: sports communications, live sports production, advertising, public relations, communication law, new media technologies, or other areas of specialty. In addition, faculty may be asked to teach general mass communications courses as needed.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Achieve effective classroom interaction with students in a professional manner through:

Maintaining accurate and secure records of student grades, attendance, and advisement.

Maintaining high standards of professionalism in the content, objectives, teaching, and grading of all courses.

Filing accurate course syllabi with the appropriate school each semester.

Maintaining an understanding of college policies and the curriculum and degree requirements of their respective schools.

Participating in departmental, school, and college faculty meetings and serving on committees as appropriate.

Contributing to the ongoing operation of their respective departments and schools.

Assessing their teaching effectiveness via annual evaluation and evaluating courses formally in accordance with official college procedure.

Assuring their availability to students, faculty, staff, and administrators by posting and keeping reasonable office hours, as determined by the dean of their respective schools.

Other relevant duties as assigned.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

On-site work is required.

Incumbents must remain relevant in the area of employment and flexible to changes in work related to institutional needs.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience

Master's Degree in Mass Communications is required with a terminal degree preferred.

Minimum of three years of professional work experience in related field.

Experience with industry professional software including in the Adobe Creative Cloud.

College level teaching experience is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid Georgia's driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days and a satisfactory MVR.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of current film and television industry trends and standards.

Demonstrated proficiency in software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud).

Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Strong program coordination skills.

Effective verbal and technical written communication skills.

Strong presentation and proposal skills.

Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.

Ability to assess student work and maintain and submit accurate and current plans, reports, and records involving student accountability, attendance, and performance.

Ability to use a classroom learning management system, such as Canvas.

Ability to conduct scholarship/creative works and service, and have teaching interests that align with the digital cinema production discipline.

Ability to collaboratively and effectively work in a diverse and inclusive environment.

Ability to relate with students and effectively teach, train, and mentor students.

Supplemental Information

Environmental, Physical, and Visual Acuity Factors

Work will be performed inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents will perform primarily sedentary work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Incumbents will regularly get up and down from a seated position, reach, bend, and stand throughout the day.

Incumbents must have close visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, transcribe, view a computer terminal, and read extensively.
