2026-2027 Guidance Counselor
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of a valid "AA" Teacher's Certificate with counseling endorsement
Two Years Teaching Experience (Expected)
Pass background check
REPORTS TO: Principal
SUPERVISES: N/A
CONTRACT: 220 days annually with salary in accordance to the certified teacher salary schedule as approved by the Board of Trustees
JOB GOAL: To provide individual counseling and/or group guidance activities based on the assessed needs of students; consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other appropriate individuals regarding services and programs available to/for students; develop procedures for program evaluation; serve as a resource person; maintain counseling records; and assist in the identification of students with special needs
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned including but not limited to:
Administers the needs assessment
Develops a guidance calendar based on the results of the needs assessment
Implements guidance program
Evaluates program at end of the year
Revises program for next year
Orders needed materials & equipment
Provides individual counseling
Provides group guidance and counseling activities based on the assessed needs of students; group guidance and counseling may include the following topical areas:
Orientation to the guidance program
Peer pressure
Bullying
Sexual harassment
Stress management
Drug education
Study skills
Assists in the transmittal of student records
Assists in the interpretation of individual reports to students, parents and teachers
Interprets test scores to appropriate individuals
Accepts, screens and follows up on referrals from teachers and parents
Assists in individual and group testing programs
Assists students in making the transition from one level to another and from one school to another
Assists in planning and implementing Parent Night or Open House
Develops a list of community referrals
Updates agency list each year
Maintains knowledge of referral procedures and guidelines
Maintains a file or referral forms
Identifies students' needs and indicate the necessity of assistance from other sources
Completes referral forms
Follows up on students' progress
Provides consultation with agencies as appropriate
Conducts an orientation for new students
Works closely with screening team in determining placement for students in any area of exceptionality
Holds individual parent conferences for any student being considered for placement in any special program
Provides consultation with teachers on educational progress of students
Consults with parents
Compiles student progress reports when requested by parents
Arranges and conducts parent-teacher-counselor conferences
Provides follow up information on all conferences and referrals to involved staff
Organizes and conducts in-service workshops
Provides resource materials
Maintains involvement with school parent associations
Invites community leaders to school functions
Performs other duties as assigned
