JOB TITLE: CNA

DEPARTMENT: PRE OP/PACU

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a non-professional staff member who provides personal care to patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The CNA assists the Registered Nurse and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in order to provide optimal care for surgical patients. The CNA will be under the supervision of the RN in accordance with state law.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Collects data regarding patient care needs and response to nursing care provided, including blood glucose and vital signs.

2. Demonstrates competency in selected psychomotor skills.

3. Evaluates effectiveness of care provided and reports to primary RN caring for the patient.

4. Demonstrates sounds knowledge base and actions in the care and decision making for designated patient population.

5. Performs documentation duties in the patient record which is timely, accurate and concise.

6. Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient/family rights, as identified by the Patient Bill of Rights.

7. Functions with an awareness and application of safety issues as identified by the institution.

8. Performs efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events.

9. Demonstrates an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for own skills and actions within scope of hospital policies and procedures.

10. Demonstrates self-directed learning and participation of continuing education to meet own developmental needs.

11. Seeks validation of knowledge base and skill level and assertively seeks guidance in areas of question.

12. Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and unit functions and strives to manage situations in a reduced risk manner.

13. Participates in unit and division of nursing PI activities.

14. Demonstrates effective communication methods and skills, using lines of authority appropriately.

15. Uses effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients/families, and staff.

16. Remains flexible in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts; participates in temporary assignment measures of division of nursing.

17. Provides basic patient care in a safe environment and reports needs and changes to primary RN.

18. Performs clerical duties as needed, orders supplies, maintains inventory and assists in maintaining overall organization of unit.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Physical strength to perform the following lifting tasks:

• Floor to waist - 50 pounds

• 14" to waist - 50 pounds

• Waist to shoulder - 30 pounds

• Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds

• Carry 40 pounds 40 feet

• Push 40 pounds 30 feet

• Pull 40 pounds 10 feet

• Carry 20# away from body for 30ft

2. Keen mental faculties to observe patient status change.

3. Communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone.

4. Emotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress level for 8-12 hours at a time associated with caring for acute patients, fast paced physical activity, rapidly changing patient conditions, emotional demands of patients and their families, and demands of maintaining effective working relationships with peers, managers, physician, and other health care workers.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to the Surgery/PACU Charge RN and/or Director of Surgery Department.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Must be certified, or registered by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation as a Nursing Assistant or have documentation of successful completion of a training course approved by another state as evidenced by a diploma or certification; be in a RN approved course, or have the potential to complete the approved orientation course and enter a CNA training course within 180 days of hire.

2. Visual acuity to hear patient verbal communication and gather data using auscultatory skills.

3. Manual dexterity of hands and feet to ambulate 8-12 hours per shift and manage multiple pieces of equipment/tubes/invasive lines safely.

4. Must be able to follow directions.

5. Must obtain BLS certification within six months of hire.

INFECTION EXPOSURE RISK LEVEL

Category I - Maximal Risk - this job exposes you to potential blood, body fluids, and tissues on a routine basis. It is recommended that you get the Hepatitis B vaccine.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Works in patient care areas where there are few discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise and the like.

2. Works with patients and may be exposed to contagious diseases or infectious materials, but potential for personal harm and injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions and equipment are used.
