Engineering Technician II Starting Salary Range: $60,249.95 - $66,151.28 Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm (40 hours/week) Location: Bloomington, IL Position start date: January 2026 McLean County Government is seeking a skilled and motivated Engineering Technician II to support critical infrastructure work across the county.

This role combines office-based technical design with hands-on fieldwork, offering variety, independence, and the opportunity to contribute to safe and effective transportation systems.

Position Overview The Engineering Technician II performs advanced technical engineering work including computerized drafting, field surveying, construction inspection, and materials testing.

This role works with independence and precision, ensuring projects comply with IDOT standards, engineering best practices, and county policies.

While the position is non-supervisory, it may provide direction to survey crew members.

Key Responsibilities * Complete computerized drafting and preliminary design for highway maintenance and construction projects.

* Research documents, process survey data in CADD software, and produce cross-sections, plan/profile sheets, drainage plans, quantities, and cost estimates.

* Serve as survey crew member or chief; operate survey equipment, record field notes, and perform calculations.

* Conduct inspections of roads, subdivision streets, bridges, and contract construction work to ensure quality and compliance.

* Oversee and coordinate contract paving projects; collect material samples and perform nuclear density and concrete tests.

* Support GIS mapping and data maintenance; assist engineers and project managers with various technical tasks.

* Perform related duties as assigned.

What You Bring * Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering software.

* Skilled use of surveying, drafting, and construction-related equipment for roadway and bridge projects.

* Strong ability to read and interpret engineering plans, specs, and blueprints.

* Experience accurately recording material quantities and conducting inspections.

* Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and traverse rough terrain safely.

* Effective communication skills and ability to work with contractors, coworkers, and township officials.

* Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform tasks involving climbing, kneeling, standing, and walking.

Minimum Qualifications * Completion of one (1) year of CAD training OR a 2-year degree in Construction or Engineering Technology.

* Minimum of four (4) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

* Valid Illinois Driver's License.

* IDOT Level I Certification (Documentation, HMA, and PCC). Work Environment Work occurs both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to weather, dust, fumes, rough terrain, and occasional interactions with upset residents.

Safety clothing and equipment are required and provided.
