Description

Hampden-Sydney College invites applications for an Equipment Mechanic to support the Grounds Department in maintaining the fleet of commercial equipment. This position performs skilled preventive and reactive maintenance on approximately 60 pieces of equipment, including tractors, Z-mowers, front-cut mowers, utility carts, vacuums, and other grounds machinery. The Equipment Mechanic also assists with motorized licensed vehicles as needed, supports special campus projects and events, and serves as the backup for carpool check-in when the campus mechanic is unavailable. This position reports to the Supervisor of Grounds.

Primary Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on all commercial grounds equipment, including gasoline, diesel, and 2-cycle engines; transmissions; drive trains; hydraulic and electrical systems.

Schedule and complete service work at manufacturer-recommended intervals and respond to reactive mechanical issues as they arise.

Research, order, and maintain inventory of parts, blades, filters, fluids, and related shop supplies.

Maintain accurate service records, including an equipment spreadsheet and work order documentation.

Conduct proactive spot inspections and ensure all equipment meets safety and industry standards.

Maintain and repair shop tools, lifts, and equipment; ensure the shop is clean, organized, and safe.

Operate welding and fabrication equipment to complete metal repairs as needed.

Support College functions, special projects, and Grounds Department operations as requested.

Serve as an emergency employee during emergencies, inclement weather, or disaster-related events.

Adhere to all H-SC safety policies and work standards.

Qualifications

Required Education, Experience & Abilities

High school diploma or GED.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in general equipment maintenance and repair, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid Virginia Class D driver’s license (must remain valid during employment).

Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a computer and printer.

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in, under, and around equipment in various physical positions.

Knowledge of or ability to learn Microsoft Excel.
