Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is a cultural leader in Aotearoa New Zealand. We strengthen and enrich our communities through art and ideas. We offer inspiring art experiences that engage and challenge diverse audiences through our extensive collection of New Zealand and international art, as well as presenting a dynamic programme of temporary exhibitions, public engagement, and outreach activities.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Visitor Experience Manager to lead our Visitor Experience Team—including Senior Gallery Assistants, Gallery Assistants, and our Visitor Experience Coordinator. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a high standard of manaakitanga for all visitors to the Gallery and overseeing the operational delivery of the visitor experience.

This role is one of two full-time, shared positions, with responsibilities across both positions. This specific vacancy is for the Sunday–Thursday rostered position (with Fridays and Saturdays off). The other position covers the Tuesday–Saturday rostered position.

Responsibilities include operational leadership, staff development, rostering, budget and resource management, policy and procedure oversight, visitor research and feedback, and risk and incident management for visitors, staff, and artworks.

He kōrero mōu: About you

The ideal candidate will have:

7+ years’ experience managing a front-of-house team in a customer-facing environment, with a proven ability to engender teamwork, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose.

Demonstrated success leading and developing teams, including coaching, performance management, and fostering a positive, supportive work culture.

Experience managing operational, financial, and human resources, including rostering, training, and budget oversight.

Proven ability to deliver high-quality visitor experiences in a fast-paced, public-facing setting, with the ability to manage escalated issues and incidents effectively.

Good working knowledge and application of tikanga and te ao Māori, with a commitment to continually developing and embedding bicultural practice in daily operations.

Awareness of accessibility principles and experience championing inclusive visitor experiences.

Experience in the arts, museum, or cultural sector is desirable, as is familiarity with visitor engagement and operational systems.
