Facilities Building System Technician Lead

Department:

University Hospital Facilities Administration

Under the supervision of a manager, this role ensures a safe, comfortable environment and the smooth operation of building systems, utilities, and indoor air quality. You will perform advanced maintenance tasks, respond to emergencies, and provide excellent customer service.

Inspect, troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair or replace building systems and equipment.

Respond to emergency issues (electrical, mechanical, medical gas) and take corrective action.

Follow proper protocols when problems cannot be resolved immediately.

Provide support to other trades and assist lower-level technicians.

Distribute work orders and maintain accurate documentation.

Keep work areas and equipment clean and organized.

Attend meetings and communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, and supervisors (written, electronic, and verbal).

Operate department vehicles as needed.

Adhere to all safety procedures and university values, including integrity and accountability.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Details

Work schedule, shift, and location may change based on operational needs and union agreements.

Overtime may be required.

Position is subject to 24-hour emergency call.

Minimum Classification Requirements:

High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience; high school algebra and geometry proficiency; minimum six years experience in building systems operations, commercial/industrial building maintenance and/or HVAC and building automation systems or equivalent combination of education and experience with 2 of those years working on large scale heating and cooling systems. Candidate must have at least one year of experience equivalent to a senior level within the skilled trades series for consideration.

Both current Ohio State employees and the general public may apply for this classified civil service position, however current Ohio State University employees in a CWA role will be given preference.

Obtain the following within the probationary period: EPA Section 608 Technician Certification- Universal and valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card; successful completion of probationary period includes demonstrated competence in each of the identified technical specialties as required for this position’s level of responsibility.

May require valid State of Ohio driver license.

Desired Qualifications:

Associates/technical degree or certificate in skilled trades/maintenance related field; two years’ experience with Direct Digital Controls (DDC) and building automation; boiler operator’s license (e.g., low pressure, high pressure); basic understanding of university building design standards (BDS) related to the maintenance and repair of building systems and equipment; basic understanding of the project process as managed by FOD Design and Construction

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs. and distinguish colors. Climb and stand on ladders for extended periods of time.

Unusual Work Conditions:

May work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for an extended period of time. May work in cramped spaces.
