Estimator

Estimators at Mid-City Electric provide the planning, coordinating, and completion of estimates for commercial electrical construction projects at some of the most sought-after job sites in the central Ohio area. The estimator is responsible for calculating costs and resources needed for assigned projects. This involves analyzing drawings, specifications, and other project documents to determine labor, material, and equipment costs. Estimators are successful at delivering results on time with all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed. They work with a wide range of internal and external personnel, establishing strong professional relationships while maintaining high communication standards.

What You Will Be Doing:

Review proposal specifications and drawings and attend pre-bid meetings to determine the scope of work and required contents of the estimate.

Review and incorporate historical data from purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity analysis reports, and other sources into unit and manhour figures.

Prepare estimates by calculating the complete takeoff of the scope of work.

Coordinate the total estimate relevant to the assigned project.

Maintain files of working documents as a backup for estimate figures.

Interface with owners, general contractors, and other contractors to provide engineering and cost data regarding project feasibility.

Follow awarded contracts as assigned – may include estimating extra work items, change orders, credits, procuring material, and other activities as needed.

May review design options and recommend the best solution based on cost, engineering quality, or material availability.

May require on-site presence to carry out duties and collaborate with the team.

Successful Estimators Have Experience:

Reviewing proposal specifications, drawings, and attending pre-bid meetings to determine the scope of work and required contents of estimate

Preparing estimates by calculating the complete takeoff based on the scope of work

Securing profitable work

Maintaining strong, positive relationships

Maintaining high levels of communication with all parties involved in projects

Follow awarded contracts which include estimating extra work charges, change orders, credits, procuring materials, etc.

Maintain knowledge of competitive advantage in the industry to aid bid process

Resolve cost discrepancies by collecting and analyzing information

Obtain accurate quotes for materials and systems to establish accurate cost estimates

Key Experience Needed to Hit the Ground Running:

Educational and experience requirements include a 4-year engineering degree or equivalent combinations of electrical technical training and/or experience

2-4 years of estimating, controls, and/or electrical engineering experience in commercial construction

Strong knowledge of estimating techniques and cost control with the ability to interpret cost data and systems

Proficiency using Accubid or similar estimating software

Salary ranges from $95,000 for entry-level to $117,000+ per year for experienced employees
