Mental Health Health Information Technician

Position Summary:

The Mental Health Health Information Technician is responsible for compiling, maintaining, and safeguarding health information records to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable regulations. This position supports the efficient management of medical records and assists in coordinating documentation processes between departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Compile and review health information to ensure completeness and accuracy of medical records.

Organize and maintain patient charts, verifying that all required reports and signatures are present.

Prepare and process health information forms, including admission charts, record requests, and certificates.

Compile and type statistical reports such as daily and monthly census, Medicaid days, admissions, discharges, and length of stay.

File reports into health information records and maintain logs of records retrieval and storage.

Provide health information to authorized personnel or departments after verifying appropriateness of the request.

Coordinate with other departments to ensure consistent health information procedures and compliance with policies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of health information technology principles and practices.

Understanding of regulations governing medical record keeping, including JCAHO and Medicare/Medicaid requirements.

Familiarity with confidentiality standards and privacy regulations related to patient information.

Knowledge of medical terminology.

Proficiency in typing, word processing, and using calculators.

Ability to identify and correct errors in medical reports and recognize missing information.

Strong organizational and data management skills with attention to detail.

Ability to compose routine business correspondence and reports.

Ability to work effectively within established guidelines and with limited variables.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of three (3) courses or nine (9) months of experience in records management; and

One (1) course or three (3) months of experience in medical terminology; and

One (1) course or three (3) months of experience in typing.

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
