Lecturer Position – PUBAFRS 2620: Science, Engineering and Technology for Policy and the Public Interest
The John Glenn College of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University invites applications for a semester lecturer to teach PUBAFRS: 2620: Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) for Policy and the Public Interest during Autumn 2025.
PUBAFRS 2620 is a 3-credit, interdisciplinary, project-based course that engages undergraduates from across the university in tackling complex challenges at the intersection of science, technology, and social impact. In this unique general education course, students work in teams to define complex public problems, develop innovative solutions, and communicate strategies to public, legislative, and industry audiences.
Position Responsibilities
Instruction and Course Facilitation
Lead twice weekly in-person class sessions that introduce students to SET policy frameworks, ethical considerations, and contemporary global challenges.
Facilitate active learning through case studies, in-class activities, and discussions that explore the intersection of technology, citizenship, and justice.
Support students in developing foundational knowledge in public interest technology and SET policy research.
Research Project Mentorship and Professional Development
Guide student teams through the design and execution of original SET policy research projects, including issue identification, stakeholder analysis, data collection, and policy communication.
Provide mentorship on research methodologies, project management, and strategic communication tailored to diverse policy audiences.
Offer professional development support by helping students explore career pathways in science and technology policy and public service, including hosting guest speakers and facilitating reflection on ethical decision-making.
Assessment and Administrative Duties
Evaluate student performance through knowledge assessments, written reflections, and team-based deliverables using provided rubrics.
Provide timely, constructive feedback on student work, including policy briefs, stakeholder analyses, and final presentations.
Maintain accurate records and submit final grades in accordance with university policies.
Uphold university standards regarding FERPA, academic integrity, and inclusive teaching practices.
Additional Information:
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in public Affairs, Business, Public Policy, Engineering, Design, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience in innovation, human-centered design, or public sector consulting.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Experience teaching or mentoring students in interdisciplinary, project-based environments.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD or terminal degree in a relevant field.
Experience working with public sector agencies or nonprofits on complex problem-solving.
Familiarity with agile development, systems thinking, and stakeholder engagement methodologies.
Previous teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level.
Additional Information
This is a term-limited, semester-long appointment.
The course is delivered in-person on the Columbus campus.
