A well-established engineering and automation solutions provider is seeking a skilled Controls Engineer to support projects in the oil & gas sector. This is a full-time, direct-hire position based in San Antonio, TX, offering a competitive salary, strong benefits, and career growth within a high-demand industry.
As a Controls Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in the design, programming, and implementation of PLC/HMI systems and control panels across field and facility automation projects. This role includes 20–30% travel to regional job sites for commissioning and support.
Key Responsibilities:
Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI systems (primarily Rockwell/Allen-Bradley; Siemens a plus)
Design and develop control panel layouts and electrical schematics in compliance with industry and safety standards (UL508A, NEC)
Interface with instrumentation, VFDs, and communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, etc.)
Participate in system commissioning, site start-up, and troubleshooting efforts (20–30% travel)
Collaborate with project teams, including electrical and mechanical engineers, fabricators, and field personnel
Prepare and maintain technical documentation including I/O lists, drawings, operation manuals, and as-builts
Ensure systems meet oil & gas industry standards and client specifications
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
Minimum 5 years of experience in controls or automation engineering, preferably within the oil & gas industry
Hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA integration
Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical or similar design tools
Strong understanding of control system architecture, instrumentation, and industrial networking
Excellent troubleshooting and field commissioning skills
Willingness to travel 20–30% to client or field sites
