The Department of Computer Science of the College of Engineering (CoEgr) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has a term faculty (non-tenure-track) opening at all ranks. As part of a premier research university situated in Virginia’s capital city, VCU’s computer science department has bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs and collaborates closely with many VCU schools and departments including numerous health care investigations with researchers on VCU’s MCV campus. VCU is a Carnegie-classified very high research activity university, and is one of the top 100 universities (top 50 in public universities) in the U.S. in federal R&D expenditures. The College of Engineering is in an extensive growth stage, significantly increasing the number of its faculty as student enrollment rises. Embarked on rapid growth, the computer science department currently has 23 tenure-track, tenured and term faculty members.
This is a teaching-intensive, 9-month position renewable annually. Teaching responsibilities may include both undergraduate and graduate courses in all areas of Computer Science. Other responsibilities will include course and curriculum development, advising students, and serving on committees. Faculty member is expected to provide high quality instruction and to develop new courses as necessary.
Required qualifications: Demonstrated ability to teach computer science courses at the undergraduate level. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. An M.S. in computer science or a closely related discipline is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
-A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related area.
-Experience teaching courses in basic programming languages
-Expertise to teach in AI or cybersecurity related areas
-The ability to supervise capstone design projects
-Willingness to engage in training grant proposals
