Position Summary:
The Underwriting Supervisor is a critical role within the Underwriting team. This individual will be responsible for leading in multiple areas within the UW department, including quality review audits, monitoring production standards, and developing the underwriters on their team. The successful candidate must possess excellent critical thinking skills, effective written and verbal communications, and successfully provide coaching and staff development.
Essential Functions:
Ensures the profitability and growth of personal lines business, including:
Supervises the underwriting function to ensure timely processing, proper risk selection, and monitoring of renewal business
Works with staff to build and maintain agency relationships
Manages complex underwriting inquiries, and reviews and approves risks beyond the authority of staff
Works collaboratively with the field marketing function to facilitate the resolution of service and other issues between the agency and the company.
Oversee the handling of customer inquiries and complaints
Functions as a Supervisor of a business unit, either directly or through subordinate leaders, including but not limited to:
Ensures adherence to underwriting policies, guidelines, and procedures
Recommends and communicates goals. Directs operations to ensure the achievement of required results
Develops and recommends operational plans and procedures
Responsible for training, coaching and leading staff
Prepares performance appraisals. Conducts performance review meetings
May recommend and/or implement employment actions, including employment/termination, corrective action, promotions/demotions, salary changes, etc.
May serve as a contributing member or leader of project team(s), coordinating resources to ensure achievement of project goals
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in business or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
3-5 years of Personal Lines Homeowners underwriting experience; Management experience preferred.
Adaptability and the capability of multi-tasking and strong time management
Ability to make effective formal presentations
Proven oral and written communication skills
Ability to work in a team environment
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and various structured analysis and design techniques
Preferred Qualifications:
Insurance related course work, including AINS, CPCU or other preferred
