The Challenge

We are hiring an experienced Engineering Technician II to join our Asheville Resident Engineering team.

In this role, you will

Serve as a Project Inspector on roadway and structure projects.

Support senior technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts.

Monitor contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications.

Observe and document contractor’s operations.

Make measurements and calculations of pay quantities.

Perform standardized material sampling and testing.

Work independently and as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors.

Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.

Obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing.

What You Bring

Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction, contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.

Sampling and testing materials experience to evaluate acceptance.

Skills evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.

Experience maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.

Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public

You can apply math skills, such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Good eyesight to use testing equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components.

Experience to exercise limited decision making and judgement.

Ability to apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations.

Ability to work around workplace hazards, including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.

You can work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions.

Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling.

Strength to lift 50+ pounds.

Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required for any assigned project in Division 13.

Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Safety toe shoes.

Education & Experience

Associates Degree in Civil Engineering, Survey Technology, or a related discipline, and

2+ years of engineering technician experience, or

An equivalent combination of education and experience.
