What You'll Be Doing
The expected salary range – If this position is underfilled at the Engineer Technician I level, Grade 17, Salary $58,152 to $69,595 (Effective November 3, 2024).
The expected salary range – If this position is filled at the Engineer Technician II level, Grade 18, Salary $60,513 to $83,671 (Effective November 3, 2024).
There is a non-competitive promotional opportunity to an Engineer Technician II, Grade 18.
This is full performance level technical paraprofessional engineering work where the employee will have contacts with engineers, architects, contractors, consultants, the general public, and related County personnel to coordinate accomplishment of projects, exchange information, provide technical advice and/or guidance, and solve problems. An incumbent offers limited direct service or assistance to the public.
Conduct traffic evaluations and field investigations to review requests for traffic safety and /or operational improvements associated with roadway signing, pavement marking, physical conditions, etc. based on the Department's guidelines and principles and the guiding principles as presented in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Coordinate the implementation of signing and marking improvements and prepares work orders that specify the required signing and marking installation and enters information from work orders into the County's database system.
Prepare clear and concise signing and marking drawings using CADD, which includes crosswalks, stop bars, raised pavement markers, directional arrows, and the installation and removal of signs.
Use GIS Arc View, which includes manipulating layers, creating views, acquiring street addresses, copying, exporting and printing maps.
Conduct field surveys of existing traffic control devices including all signing and pavement markings.
Make decisions regarding traffic control signs and pavement markings in the field, and coordinate work with the Sign and Marking Shop in all aspects of signs and pavement markings installations.
Prepare written reports of field observation and making recommendations related to the installation and modification of traffic control devices.* The employee will be required to drive a vehicle to perform traffic engineering field work.
* Offsite work is required and the telework eligibility is hybrid.
Minimum Qualifications
EXPERIENCE
If Filled at Engineer Technician I level: Considerable Three (3) years experience in an applicable technical field that has required the application of principles of physical science and mathematics to assist engineers in solving civil, traffic or environmental engineering problems.
If Filled at Engineer Technician II level: Thorough Five (5) years experience in an applicable technical field that has required the application of principles of physical science and mathematics to the solution of civil, traffic, fire protection or environmental engineering problems.
ALL LEVELS - EDUCATION:
Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
ALL LEVELS – EQUIVALENCY:
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
ALL LEVELS – LICENSE:
Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant's state of residence.

Interview preferences will be determined based on the following criteria:
Experience of the process for installing and maintaining traffic control devices based on the departments guidelines and the principles as presented in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
Experience in the preparation of intersection and roadway signing and marking plans utilizing computer aided design (CADD) tool.
Experience using GIS Arc view and utilizing Microsoft Office Suite - Access, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
Experience of the principles of traffic control concepts and guidelines.
Experience in communicating orally and preparing reports.
