Pharmacy Technician
Place of Performance: North Las Vegas, NV
General Description:
Pharmacy Technician shall support inpatient and outpatient activities related to all or some the following areas described in each of the following task areas.
Specific Tasks:
• Provide intravenous admixture related services that include (but not limited to):
a) Preparing IV admixtures (piggybacks, large volume parenterals and chemotherapy) utilizing aseptic techniques and BD IV Prep in a timely manner for final check by a Pharmacist.
b) Maintaining pre-determined stock levels.
c) Utilizing the VistA computer system to maintain records and produce reports.
d) Working closely with the Technician Supervisor to respond to changing use patterns and resolve problems.
e) Maintain and document all assigned IV tasks to maintain a sterile environment according to USP 797/800.
• Provide unit/clinic inventory stock management related services that include (but not limited to):
a) Utilizing auto generated reports to replenish the inpatient automated dispensing cabinets (Pyxis) with sufficient quantities of medication and supplies.
b) Replenishing medications and supplies for inpatient units according to “on demand” orders requested by nursing staff.
c) Conducting monthly and quarterly inspections of all patient care units and other areas/departments of the medical center and outpatient clinic areas where medications are stored, administered, or dispensed.
d) Maintaining proper records of medications and supplies issued to provide data for reports as needed.
e) Replenish and maintain medication inventory within Boxpicker, including removing outdated medications.
• Provide crash cart replenishment related services that include (but not limited to):
a) Replenishing emergency kits and crash cart medications with exact items needed according to the standardized list.
b) Checking and documenting all expiration dates for emergency kits and crash cart medications when they are replenished, including during the monthly ward inspection.
• Provide unit dose packaging related services that include (but not limited to):
a) Utilizing the unit dose packaging equipment (TCGRX and Fluidose) to prepare “unit doses” for dispensing through the Inpatient Pharmacy section.
b) Preparing labels for repackaged medications including bar codes and specialized labeling, e.g., half-tablet doses, oral liquid syringes, etc., in accordance with applicable laws, requirements of official packaging and established standards of good professional practice.
c) Performing routinely scheduled preventative maintenance and cleaning of the equipment.
d) Recording all pertinent information for each medication canister packaged.
• Provide outpatient prescription processing/filling services that include (but not limited to):
a) Receives mailed-in prescriptions and refill requests.
b) Examining prescriptions and refill requests against computer medication profiles for administrative irregularities (i.e., missing directions, missing VA provider identification, non-formulary medication, etc.) and makes appropriate referrals to a pharmacist. Exercise good judgment regarding referral of problems requiring the professional judgment of a Clinical Pharmacist.
c) Entering refill requests into the EHR accurately and efficiently.
d) Removing prescription labels and related documents from computer printers and correlates them by patient. Selects the correct medications and counts the correct quantity when filling manually or using automated equipment when appropriate. Accurately and carefully applies labels to the prepared containers and places the completed orders in trays or bags for the final check by a Clinical Pharmacist.
e) Verifying the identification of the patient prior to releasing the medications to the patient at pick-up window.
f) Preparing packages of completed prescriptions that are designated to be mailed and transporting them to the appropriate area for pick-up.
g) Operating the ScriptPro system in the filling of prescriptions and provides preventative maintenance and cleaning of the ScriptPro filling system.
• Provide call center services that include (but not limited to):
a) Answering the telephones in the outpatient telephone triage area in a timely and professional manner.
b) Answering patient questions regarding the status of their prescription, refill information or other general questions. Process refills accordingly.
c) Transferring questions that are clinical in nature or require a pharmacist’s interpretation, such as tablet/capsule identification, to a clinical pharmacist.
d) Send refill requests to providers using EHR.
• Provide medication re-packaging services that include (but not limited to):
a) Re-packaging bulk drugs, which includes liquids, tablets, capsules, ointment, and creams, etc. into specified quantities and various size containers in accordance with applicable laws, requirements of official packaging and established standards of good professional practice.
b) Preparing labels for repackaged medications including specialized labeling, e.g., barcoded labels.
c) Maintaining all pertinent information on the Pharmacy Service Prepackaging Record.
d) Replenish and maintain medication inventory within Boxpicker, including removing outdates.
• Provide mail/receiving/destruction services that include (but not limited to):
a) Accurately pack prescriptions for mail applying correct postage using approved mailing software.
b) Receive, check, and properly documents pharmacy inventory received from logistics or outside sources. Stocks inventory in the correct location in a timely manner.
c) Return expired or unusable medications using the appropriate destruction process outlined per policy.
• Will work in both the outpatient and inpatient pharmacy settings.
Citizenship:
• Citizen of the United States.
Education:
• A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months’ experience.
Certification:
• Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required.
English Language Proficiency:
• Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Experience:
• Must have at least 2 years of experience in hospital (inpatient) pharmacy.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
• Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
• Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
• Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
• Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
• Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
