The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety and quality of City Park properties and lands. This is accomplished by supervising and participating in various maintenance services. Other duties may include maintaining plant life, trees and shrubs; fertilizing, and pesticide applications, supervising work crew activities, maintaining greenhouse and tree farm and drip irrigation system, providing various forms of administrative services and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position provides direction to other employees.
This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent.
Maintains City parks and lands by mowing grounds, weed eating and edging, removing trash and debris, tilling, planting flowers and shrubs, caring for trees, including removing suckers, pruning and tree removal and maintaining greenbelts and flower beds, including pruning and debris removal.
Completes weeding, irrigation and chemical work by assigning properties to be worked on, scheduling work assignments, spraying trim lines, flower beds and tree rings and installing, maintaining and repairing irrigation systems.
Supervises work crews by interviewing and selecting applicants, coordinating daily work activities, developing work schedules, preparing evaluations, counseling and coaching employees and administering the disciplinary process.
Assists with special events by setting up and breaking down special event equipment, cleaning and preparing special event locations, responding to emergency tree removals and storm events, removing fallen tree limbs and providing other forms of assistance as requested.
Maintains inventories by assessing material, supply and equipment needs, contacting vendors for bids, picking up parts from vendors or having parts delivered and ensuring proper orders are received.
Provides various forms of administrative service by completing time sheets, maintaining records of work and logging schedules and daily work completed.
Formal Education / Knowledge
Work requires knowledge of grounds, property, equipment, and horticulture maintenance. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Minimum of three years of relevant experience.
Certification and Other Requirements:
Valid Class C Drivers License
ISA Certified Arborist - required
Texas Certified Landscape Professional (TCLP) - If not currently held, required within one year from date of hire.
Texas Master Certified Nursery Professional - preferred
Certified Chemical Applicator License - preferred
Overall Physical Strength Demands
Medium - Exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
Intermediate - Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Basic - Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Basic - Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Receives general directions. The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. The employee may choose the appropriate procedure or policy. Performance is reviewed periodically.
Follows all expenditure procedures and completes purchase card reconciliations.

Work requires functioning as a lead worker performing essentially the same work as those directed, and includes overseeing work quality, training, instructing, and scheduling work.
